My brother once said, “Happiness is like peeing in your pants. Everyone can see it, but you, can feel, its warmth. Happy birthday grandma!”

I have become so much happier since I stopped trying to fix my unhappy feelings. Actually allowing myself to feel all of it, and not judge one feeling as better than the other, made me feel so at peace.

“Happy little accidents”—Bob Ross, quite literally

When people think about "being happy" in general about their life, what they are actually describing is being content. We have times when we are happy but if we are overall content with our lives it will be easier for us to have more frequent moments of happiness.

The real goal is contentment. Get to a point where you meet your needs and are content with that, anything more is bonus.

this!!! It’s learning the difference between happiness and content.

If we lived in a costant state of happiness, probably we wouldn't even notice it.
If you eliminate all the lights from a picture you won't see nothing, but also if you delete all the dark you won't see nothing, you need some dark to see the light and you need some light to see the dark.
In an utopical world without sadness we wouldn't be able to feel happy, because in order to be happy you need to be sad sometimes.
(my own thought)

I found Buddhist philosophy very helpful for this reason... can't always be happy, but can certainly try to be at peace

So incredibly true. Happiness is not something we should chase after as it is merely a state. My literature professor used to tell us in one of our lessons that laughter and comedy are hard to capture, preserve or replicate compared to drama. How many times can you make people laugh out of the same joke? Compare that to the number of time you can make people cry from a tear-jerking drama.

THANK YOU, someone finally said it.

Another thing. “That if you aren’t laughing or smiling, you aren’t happy.” I HATE this though process. Cause you can be perfectly happy. In your own mind.

I’m not always smiling. It’s just who I am. My face is constantly resting at a frown. So EVERYONE assumes I’m angry. No, I’m content. I can be happy internally.

I prefer to focus on the concept of subjective well-being rather than always being happy, it lets me accept the highs and the lows much healthier since I’m not obsessing over either

If we were always happy then it would lose its value.
I think everyone should learn to appreciate every emotion because that's what defines you

The full range of emotions are part of the human condition and to be valued.
There's a book by Leo Buscaglio (I think that's how he spells his name) that I read in the 1980s that explains this really well.
There is a time and place for all human emotions.
If you aren't sad when a loved one dies, or angry when you witness injustice, or scared when you lose your job -- something is wrong.

Even the Bible says, "Be angry and sin not. " Meaning, allow yourself to feel emotions, just don't let your emotions decide how you are going to behave.

This made my cry so bad. I always thought something was wrong with me, because it felt like I never truly was happy in my life. I always thought the feeling of happiness in life was something I didn't have but I was just having the wrong view that happiness was something you felt much longer than just some short moments.

I feel this is partly true. Things/moments make you, but you don't have to feel happy all the time. You can just be content or neutral until the next happy moment happens. Leave yourself open for them by not allowing negative thoughts to take up all your time.

Such a crucial life lesson. Total happiness does not exist, and unhappy moments are an inevitable part of life we can learn a lot from.

Realizing I'm in control of my happiness, makes me happy, dwelling on and being thankful for what i have, instead of slaving away for things i want, and don't necessarily need.
