From personal experience, I can say the worst thing about being an aspiring author or really any profession that works with words in this day and age is the fact that people nowadays have no reading comprehension whatsoever. It’s absolutely ridiculous to me how something can be spelled out so clearly yet still be misunderstood.

As a person who really enjoyed the album- I can give context, that’s the full verse:

My friends used to play a game where
We would pick a decade
We wished we could live in instead of this
I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists
And getting married off for the highest bid
Everyone would look down 'cause it wasn't fun now

Nostalgia is a mind's trick

These are some fully self aware lyrics but people seem to listen only to the first half… this is the kinda stuff that ruin the creative vibe. If you’re gonna hate on it at least give it a listen and know what you’re hating on.

The thing these people seem to ignore is the CONTEXT OF THE SONG.
The literal next verse AFTER this states that her friends would get uncomfortable after she'd say something like this, and she would try to take it back, because she realizes that her nostalgia and her longing to escape from her current reality is overlooking the gaping problems in the places she wants to escape to.

The entire song was about trying to escape from the reality she's living in, and instead try to find solace in other places.
Fun fact to all the ignorant people getting offended at this; the 1830s were really important for American art, and since Taylor is American, it is understood that she wishes to be part of the 1830's BECAUSE she wants to take part in those art movements.

People should take a look at the entire verse, not just taking two lines out of context…she’s talking about it being a childhood thought, yet she realizes now that she’s older that she really wouldn’t want to live in the 1830s at all. It was just a child’s naive thoughts.

The main reason this lyric was made, because RIGHT AFTER, IF YOU LISTENED TO THE WHOLE VERSE, she says that nostalgia and longing for the great poetry and literature in the 1830s blinded her from seeing all the negative sides, which she says in one of the next lines "if I've been there, I would've hated it"

They used to have a reality show called " pioneer house" where people would build a log cabin and live like the pioneers did. There was a black man who's father came to help him but left after a few hours because "slavery" bothered him...there was no slaves and a huge time period, some of which was after slavery
