Marking your child's height as they grow is one of the oldest traditions between parent and child. In this video, I will show you how I carve my popular children's growth chart using a router, a couple of bits and some very basic tools.
Every child deserves this experience with you ... so stop marking up door jambs and walls. Lets make a growth chart that is as portable as it is beautiful. Take it along if you ever move away or renovate.

I just watched a half dozen videos on making a growth ruler. I found yours to be the most helpful. I watched a video where a guy actually hand carved the numbers, videos using a CNC and videos with all kinds of jigs. Not knocking CNC machines, if you have one or even access to one - more power to you. Your 2 combination square jig was brillant. Thanks.

Now that's a steady hand with the router, free cutting the numbers. Looks great

This video was very detailed and well explained. It's one of the better ones I've seen. Tip: to keep the black paint (or any paint) from bleeding into the wood grain, seal the board first with some poly before you paint, then sand afterwards.

The most detailed tutorial on the subject on YouTube (in my opinion). I appreciate the effort you put forth. Thanks for the easy to understand explanations as it pertains to the different tools used in the project. The video lighting and camera usage were great also. Thanks! I will look at it one more time and tackle this for my daughter’s bedroom makeover! New subscriber here!

I appreciate the time and effort you put into tools needed, and step by step process. Really helps to see your thought process and how you adapted.

Question for you: if I use the canyon black satin paint for my notches and numbers, do you think I could go over top at the end with any stain? Like even a white or grey stain? I was thinking I should be able to wipe it off the black and not affect it. I’m making this as we speak! I’m using a piece of 1x6 spruce so I’m going to use the minwax pre stain conditioner as well.
