In this quick tip by Jonathan Williamson we show you how to create materials for Cycles in Blender that are completely shadeless; e.g. they do not receive shadowing or highlights. Shadeless materials are very useful for rendering a scene with a background image or any other numerous uses.

this is a very clever manner to do shadeless shader. Congrats.
Farmfield: in fact, in vray, ie, constant shading is not a basic option. But you're right it should be.

Is it also possible to make an object shadeless, but that it still can recieve shadows from one specific other object?

Or just:
1. Select the image plane
2. Go to Material and set Surface to Emission
3. Go to Object and scroll down to Ray Visibility
4. In Ray Visibility untick everything except Camera

Yeah. Or shouldn't someone tell Brecht & the guy's that this is a pretty basic function in any renderer and let them create a shadeless material. Or do we want yet another 'close without saving' thingie where people whine for a basic functionality for 6 years where the lack of functionality somehow is a good thing!? And yes, hate me all you want, been there, done that, hehe... :D
