WTF is the fediverse?

There’s the metaverse, the multiverse, the spider-verse — and the fediverse. While arguably the least exciting of the names, the last is the -verse that seems most imminently real, as platforms like Instagram begin to adopt it.

The fediverse is basically a fancy name for a world in which social platforms would share a single communications protocol called ActivityPub. Which is a fancy way of saying that the fediverse stands to make social platforms more like email clients, as Digiday senior media editor Tim Peterson explains in this video.

This was a really useful and well made video. Not sure why it barely has any views.

It sounds like an interesting concept, but like you said, it all depends on whether the big platforms will choose to adopt it. Sounds like something the EU would have to force on them for it to happen.

Also kinda similar to RSS, if I understood it correctly. Apart for the outbox part.
