No horn "lever." Trains in Japan have horn "pedals" on the floor. What you saw were the reverser and brake on the left and throttle on the right. The floor has the pedal for the variable horn which has 2 modes - warning and "dire" warning frequencies - horns are only allowed to be used when passing construction work or when someone looks as though they're too close to the tracks on platforms.

5:20 Sunrise does not pick or drop off passenger in Hamamatsu for Tokyo bound train. However it does stop in Hamamatsu in the other direction. Edit: Hamamatsu stop for tokyo bound train is for crew change.

Again, great video as usual. I travelled on Sunrise Izumo several years ago from Tokyo to Yonago, I was only able to book a smoking single room on the lower deck. However my experience for Sunrise is still great and I was able to get a shower card at boarding in Tokyo station.

Ah, I see. I'd heard of other sleeper trains but they're all gone now - save a few that are more true 'excursion' than actual transport.

I think I'd be just fine with the six minutes, I'm one of the few who use the Amtrak showers as intended to save water. :D Though this is the length of sleeper train that leaves me torn about the utility, especially with the alternative being about 4:30. I'm glad to see it still going.

I thought that the drivers cab must be very small as you could see him driving it forward to join it up to the other train.I almost expected his feet to be on the shoulders of the man doing the train coupling!

4:38 No food sold on board: definitely different from sleeper trains run by Amtrak, Via Rail or by almost any of those rail companies based in the British Isles or Schengen Area.

The sunrise expresses themselves are quite popular, but the JR companies seem to think of it more as a burden than anything else, due to the complexity of inter-JR operations and scheduling conflicts with commuter trains. It's a shame that a lot of the other routes were cancelled, and I do hope a replacement for the 285series will be made.

Looks like a nice first class sleeper train. I still feel there is a place for good overnight sleeper trains. It helps get you there while you would be sleeping. No need to get up early and ride on one of the high speed trains to your destination. It also would save you a hotel room at the city you were planing to go to if it was too far for a one day round trip. I assume the reason for no food service was due to the departure and arrival times and they assumed you would eat either before you boarded or after you leave in the morning.

never took the sunrise but saw one when taking a shinkansen along that route, really cool looking trains in person. Its cool they still have the service for now, but the Shinkansen is much much faster of course.

You successfully booked a ticket for the single deluxe room on the Internet?! Jeez how lucky you are!

What I know is booking a ticket from the ticket office for the single deluxe room is basically the only way to do so, because internet booking cannot beat those MARS (JR’s ticket booking system) terminals at ticket office.
The ticket office staff can input all the information first and press the search button once the clock hits 10am JST, where the latest tickets are available for reservation…
