REST API Calls in Power Automate - Beginners Tutorial

Показать описание
This video tutorial shows how to do REST API Calls, also known as HTTP Requests, and interpret the response with JSON parsing. In the last advanced part, we'll do multiple REST API calls from an Excel sheet, write the results back to Excel, and error handling based on the status codes.

0:00 REST API Call
A REST API Call, also known as HTTP Request, is like a Google search: You make a request and get a response back. The response is usually in JSON format. In Power Automate, we use an HTTP action. Provide a Method and a URL (the endpoint).

4:29 JSON Parsing
With a Parse JSON action, we make it easy to refer to the response data from the REST API Call (HTTP Request). Provide a JSON schema.

7:52 Multiple REST API Calls at once
The complete solution reads ID data from an Excel sheet, performs multiple REST API Calls, and writes the results back to Excel. Use a List rows present in a table action to read the Excel data. Then the Apply to each action to iterate through the Excel data. Finally, an Update a row action to write the results back.

13:58 Error-handling the API Responses
Power Automate is exceptional in doing error handling. First, we'll create our error handling based on the Status codes from the API response. Then, use a Condition of a Switch on the Status code and perform the actions in the branches/cases. Remember to use the Configure run after setting in the Switch.

Hi Anders,

Thank you so much for sharing very useful videos on RPA. You are the best RPA teacher. You helped me and so many other people all around the world to start RPA as career. Really awesome. Kindly share videos on Microsoft Power Apps and Power Virtual Agents.

great video, thanks! I noticed the full automation took 30 or 40 seconds to run, did you have to somehow code in a timer or delay function to take a break in between api calls? If so, how did you do it in power automate?

Excellent - I *think* you might have helped me solve an issue with Power BI not being able (due to Parameter usage to calculate the total number of pages) to paginate JSON data when published in the cloud ;-). Currently, in order to get around this limitation, I used Power Automate Desktop to automate the refresh of the desktop version, save, then publish. Not really best practice and more of a sledgehammer approach

Thank you for your excellent video. I watched the entire thing, but I haven't been able to resolve my issue. Specifically, I'm trying to connect ChatCompose to Power automatically, but I'm unsure how to do it, and I can't find information automating the API workflow to make request calls from another system. Please assist me with this. I sincerely appreciate your help

Hi Anders. thanks this was great. I do have some questions

1. Lets say I have a similar requirement whereby I need to connect to a website to fetch data and populate a excel, If I don;t know the API url, how do I find that out? In your case you had given the direct api url, but if I need to find out the api of a customer website, what is the easiest way to find out the api of the website, and if they have exposed the api (to make calls) or not?

2. in the "http" connector (below the method and uri), we have "headers" and "Queries". I have seen some people putting the value of "application/JSON". do we need to put that? what does it mean?

Hi Jensen, Does this Premium version need to buy a license? Currently I am using the free license of the office 365 E1 plan.

@andersjensenorg
could you help me please. I'm trying to use PowerAutomate HTTP action, but I am facing problem with Authentication. I've heard PoweAutomate does no support Auth 2.0 (PKCE). Is it true?

My flow successfully runs.. but my output is empty.. Im looking at my flow and it looks like for some reason I'm getting an empty array value returned back from my call.. Not sure what I'm doing wrong..
