I ran a pirate isp using slackware

More reliable than anything we had at that time

I like how Patrick has complete c/c++ dev envs setup in the kde dekstop.

I use Slackware, for not a very true reason 😅. Very good distro, is the best old school choise, and alive "father", of distros 😊

Even for studying, Arch does the same role and it has a better package system. I'm sorry! I'm not trying to be rude. And don't get me wrong! I don't use Arch but, I did work with Slackware from 2001 to 2006. And I know it since 1999(version 7x if I'm not wrong). It was my first distro. I have an "emotional link" with it. So, believe me it's not a good idea to use Slackware in production environment. It's unnecessary headache.

It reminded me of FreeBSD when I tried it. One of my major gripes about Linux is the haphazard way distros use the file tree. Where do installed packages live? Depends.

Thank you for giving the respect this distro deserves. Started with Slackware with its first ELF binaries. OMG, the memories of searching out university ftp repositories...

I started with Slackware in 1993, installed from 66 convenient floppy disks!

I've tried a few Linux distros but Slackware is the easiest to use and manage. It's easy to install if you use Liveslack.

I have been using Slackware since the turn of the century. Every so often I still make an installation booboo. A few months ago, I decided to clean up my setup and leave a single version in charge. I have it almost right and, nearly at the end of the process, I now only need to throw out duplicates from a list and make sure it is the oldest one that I throw out. Just try that with an installation system like the one Ubuntu has. If you have overlapping versions like I do at the moment, the automated system repair would probably brick it or wipe your precious data files.

True. What you said is so true. I've used Slackware back in 2004 and leaned a lot of things about Linux.

At this point in time, sticking to slackware is .... Anachronistic.
If anything, Arch should be the choice, not only because it is a children of slackware, but because it can actually keep pace with the new incoming techs.
And it has an actual package manager. (yes, I know slack has its tools, but ultimately it is not a complete package managing solution)
And if your argument is "being in full control" or "learning how Linux works", the true choice should be Gentoo then.
Hell, even LFS. But at that point the line between exploration and self-harm is quite thin 😆

Plus recommending *untu based distros, or OpenSUSE is Ugh..

i wouldn't call AI a 4th industrial revolution, that's just some WEF yapping point.

Slackware and Mandrake(rip) are the originals.

It's great, but I wish it didn't entrench elogind everywhere it possibly can.
I wish it's default choice of software was better.
Then it would have been my daily driver.
But it isn't.
