The New Springbok Tactic That We Could See Against Ireland

The Springboks dominated Wales in very, ultra, super important QAC. One particularly interesting aspect was that Faf De Klerk showed a new tactic on attack. Let's dive deeper.

From the thumbnail I thought this was going to be about Faf growing an intimidating moustache.

I am worried about tests against Ireland.Forget about Bulls Leinster game. They will be a different side under Andy Farrell and gained valuable experience of Loftus conditions. Thanks for a very stimulating channel that serves rugby well.

I actually saw this, and it's frequency told me that it was a new attacking tactic...noticed how close to the tackle our players passed? I think this is to nullify Jacques Nienaber's rush defense that the Irish will probably adopt. How many times have we seen the Boks off-loading or passing right at the tackle point? I'm not that well-versed in rugby, but I saw Ox giving nice cute passes in midfield to each of the loosies to try and break the Welsh through the middle. It drew in more defenders towards the ruck to exploit the wide channels where Jesse and Mapimpi are unstoppable. New fan, don't judge my terminology.lol

I feel FAF has always done what you describe and similar; one of his strengths and contributions.

Picked up on this also. Interesting that Grant Williams, a bigger running threat, did not do it.

It’s funny cause Faf did this against Ireland in 2016 in his debut series but he has not been allowed to this since then cos RASSIE and Nienaber were somewhat risk averse and Faf had to play static and prep for box kicking

We saw less of that in the Wales game, and we may see more of what we used to seeing from the Boks but I think they should use this strategy that you highlighting because these 4 years before the next world cup is where new things need to be trialed

Faf has always done this in "open" games where the backline throws the ball around against weaker opposition. He picks up, engages the defence, and then picks a passing option, just like he did for the Lions when he was still a new kid on the block. Against Ireland (and any other tougher opposition), the Boks implement an entirely different game plan and you won't see any of the expansive rugby they played against Wales.

I don't think the Wales test really prepared the Springboks for Ireland. A number of players from Saturday won't be playing against Ireland and Ireland will be posing a whole different bunch of questions. Not taking anything away from Wales they play differently to Ireland. Having said that, Wales defense was great but for one or two slip ups on defense and I wasn't too impressed with the Springboks seemingly not getting it together against the Welsh defense. Lots of hard work this week and next before the first of the test series.

I fancied Ireland to win the series or atleast draw it at worst - until JGP got injured that is. He is absolutely key to Ireland.

Intelligent 9's like Faf scare me. The box kicking Connor Murray's of the world scare no one - well that's not true, he scares me when he wears green...

I actually thought Faf played really badly against Wales. Doing things that no one else is on board with.
