Signal GH App - Signal Meter App for TV Antennas

In this video I review the Signal GH app. It works with the Silicon Dust HDHomerun to provide detailed signal information of over the air channels with an antenna. This is very helpful to locate the best spot for an indoor, attic, or outdoor antenna.

Thanks to Glenn Howes, developer of the Signal GH app, for sponsoring this video!

For RV antenna users. Parking a car, truck or van next to your camper can throw everything off. Sometimes parking backed in vs head in or on the other side or rear when at narrow site. One campsite to the next one over can make a huge difference. A neighbor with a tall rig can either ruin or improve your signal .I had one place that I parked across the way, both me and my neighbor immediately had improved reception.

I’ve been in contact with Glenn for years now. Awesome dude. I even assisted in beta testing. Signal GH has been my go to for years and continues to be.

Thank you for giving us this information. I have an HD HomeRun but I only have Android devices. IF and when this available on Android I would like to have this app. Please keep us updated. Thanks again.

Very cool app and this is exactly the kind of thing I had hoped smartphones would do back when they were first introduced, but it became obvious that an OTA reception meter wasn't really practical as you needed an external tuner like the HDHR. I'd love to see something like this on Android, but it's difficult for one person to develop simultaneously on both platforms. Thanks to Glenn Howes for developing apps that are actually useful tools and not just addictive mind-control.

Thanks SO much for this video, this app was a complete game-changer for me done I live in a very weak signal area. It allowed me to tweak my antenna placement and direction so that I note get a decent signal on several channels, including ATSC 3 ones in Oklahoma City

All TV tuners should be like this. Love it. Wish it was available for Fire TV Recast.

Very nice app. It’s not a free app in the iOS store. I had to pay $2.99 for it. Just an FYI

I tend to use DTV reception maps etc., move the pointer where the antenna is, then look for a landmark along the channel' direction line. This isn't "scientific, " but closer than a magnetic compass. I can fine-tune from there, although usually don't need to. If I had a lot of forest near the house, this wouldn't work.

For viewers who don’t have an HD Homerun, most digital converter boxes and several TV brands have OTA signal meters built in.

Great video and very timely as i just purchased the HDhomerun 4K Flex for my network and happen to be in a weaker signal area. Now if it were just available on Android :) All good though, I'm the only one in my household with Android! Also, you didn't mention in the video there was a cost associated ($2.99)as George Kellerbauer does below. This is a slight bummer as I only see the app being used while setting up an antenna install instead of using it consistently. At this point for me, it's a good to know thing because I'm not moving my antenna anywhere else LOL! Anyway, Thanks again!

You have done some paid consulting for me in the past. You advice was a great help and I do recommend it to those who view your videos. You advice sure beats spending hours trying to figure it out. You are right about those 200 mile cheap plastic units. Even in the attic heat those will fall apart. I tried one before I turned to your advice. What a waste of money and time!

I may jump on this HRHomeRun for a fine tuner. I do have questions about using the equipment and the app for signal reception from two different directions. I am currently picking up stations broadcast local from a cluster of towers to the North. There is another cluster of towers to the West located about 80 miles away. They have some stations I would like to receive. As stations convert to ATSC 3.0 will those signals carry further? We are basically flat in North Louisiana. I have one of those great big Yagi, all metal, antennas in the attic that I am not using, looks like something out of the 60s. It is huge compared to the one you recommended for my area. Is there a way to point the big antennae to the West to possibly pick up those stations? Use the HDHomeRun with ATSC 3.0 to fine tune? Can I combine the signals from both into one coax feed? Just curious.

Oh, you once mentioned that some TV broadcaster were going to get squeezed out the market. I am starting to see in the TV Guide for my area notes, "Station is no longer broadcasting." Looks like we are starting to see the squeeze.

I don't have HD HomeRun but it would be handy to have something that shows multiple stations when adjusting the antenna.

Tyler you're going to think I'm crazy, but I was at the mall yesterday and seen people from clear tv showing off their clear antenna and I told them no thanks and the one guy said that I must have seen the antenna man on you tube and I told him yes and he said to me that you're nothing but trying to prevent people from purchasing their product and don't listen to him because you're nothing but trouble and I just shaked my head no and walked away. So tyler you helped me use my common sense!

He really needs to do an Android app. That's a deal breaker for myself and many others 😕

Seems like a useful app. If you don't have an iOS device or you don't want to spend the $2.99 there is another option. If you have a HDHomerun and a Windows laptop SiliconDust makes a program called "Windows (HDHomeRun Config GUI for TECH)". You can manually select a different RF channel for each tuner and then select different channels on the frequency. It then shows the program type, whether its atsc 3 or 8vsb or whatever. It gives you QAM information information if applicable and tells you if a channel is encrypted. It has color coded percentage bars for Signal Strength, Signal Quality and Symbol Quality. Al three of those bars move in real time. You can flip between the 4 channels to find the the best compromise for you antenna position.

Too bad it's not available for Android 🙁

Is there not a simple inline signal strength meter? As you see for Satellite TV. Thanks again for the great service you provide
