Alex Katz, born in 1927 in Brooklyn, the United States of America, is a contemporary painter living and working in New York. Katz is best known for his representational paintings depicting simplified figures on a monochrome background, or landscapes and still lives alternating flats planes of colour with energetic brushstrokes. The illustrious career of the American artist spans over seven decades. Katz made a name for himself in the New York art scene in the 1950s. During the absolute height of Modern Art and Abstract Expressionism, Katz’s paintings went against the grain by developing a characteristic figurative visual language.

Were we right as students whispering as we walked between studio classes, painting was dead. Yes but human’s must always resurrect dead things. We can never be satisfied in letting something have it’s final rest. Letting go is never easy. To be honest things changed with Katz. Both in meaning and formal image. This is the point that most who enter the art labyrinth, never find their way out. Katz found a way out. Like other figurative greats he understood the answer; finding his own meaning and formal image.. The appropriations at first seemed silly but in the end transformed him. That what started off as that (intuitive play) became “for him” deeply personal and serious. Again thank you CAI for your presentations they make think! Wonderful stuff!

Great to watch with a lot to learn about Katz and his techniques. The only downside is I would have liked to see titles more clearly. Where the paintings are, where they are available for public viewing would be a plus. Thanks for posting.

Hockeny or has a darker side that I want to see more about. Hard to like most of these faces that has turn into a play with standard forms. I like 6:23 it as a fresh wind. Tomorrow I forget it probly...

He has sure been painting for a long time, but I never liked a single one of his paintings. I think I sat near him long ago at a Harold Rosenberg lecture. I do admire his work ethic but my view is that every atist is ultimately limited by his/her innate ability or lack thereof. Just once I'd like to see him have some kind of real breakthrough and produce a great painting, but really that is impossible.
