Phillip Sear plays a subtle (and modernistic) cradle song from 1922 by the British pianist, conductor, and composer Ethel Liggins (1886-1970), writing under her stage name Ethel Leginska.
----------------------------------------------------
"Ethel Liggins, also known as Ethel Leginska, was a British pianist and conductor born in Hull, England in 1886. She studied piano and composition at the Hoch conservatory in Frankfurt and also studied with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna. Leginska made her debut as a pianist in London in 1902 and toured Australia in 1905. In 1906, she started performing under the stage name Ethel Leginska at the suggestion of British socialite Lady Maud Warrender. Leginska married composer Emerson Whithorne in 1907 and they had one son, Cedric, in 1908. The couple divorced in 1916 and Leginska became vocal about the lack of opportunities for women in the music industry.

Leginska made her official debut in the United States in New York's Aeolian Hall in 1913 and quickly gained popularity for her distinctive style and performances. In 1923, she went to London to study orchestral conducting with Eugene Goossens and also studied with Robert Heger in Munich. She made her debut as a conductor in the United States in 1925 with the New York Symphony Orchestra and later conducted at the Hollywood Bowl. Leginska retired from performing as a pianist in 1926 and focused on conducting and composing. In 1927, she founded the Leginska Symphony Orchestra in New York City, which only lasted for one season. Leginska continued to conduct and compose throughout her career and died in 1970 in Los Angeles." (brief biography written by ChatGPT, based on Wikipedia (retrieved 21/12/22)).

Leginska did not write many individual works, but some were large scale, including three operas (it would be interesting to hear her 'Joan of Arc', premiered in Los Angeles as recently as 1969).

A cradle song? It seems more a funeral song!

hmm, it's different. Doesn't resonate with me. (aka I don't like it but I'm sure you played it well).

Spécial mais intéressant ! il arrive d'entendre dans certains opéras des berceuses dramatiques sur des enfants morts qui vous tirent les larmes du corps. Pour Noël cela n'est pas bien gai !!
