Ethel Leginska plays Chopin: Ballade N° 1 (Piano roll recording)

Recorded on a Duo-Art piano roll in 1915.

Ethel Leginska (1886 – 1970) was born in Hull, England. She studied in Frankfurt and Vienna. She toured Europe and the US as a concert pianist and then became a conductor at a time when women conductors were a rarity. In the late 1920s, she founded her own women's orchestra. In 1935 she became the first woman to conduct her own opera in a major opera house. In 1939 she settled in LA, becoming a piano teacher.
