Belgian historian of food, Pierre Leqluercq noted that the first recorded mention of French fries is in a Parisian book in 1775. He traced the history of French fries and found the first recipe of what is a modern day French fry in a French cookbook from 1795, La cuisinière républicaine.

It was these Parisian fries that inspired Frederic Krieger, a musician from Bavaria who learned how to make these fries in Paris, to take the recipe to Belgium. Once there, he opened his own business and began to sell fries under the name ‘la pomme de terre frite à l’instar de Paris’ which translated to ‘Paris-style fried potatoes.’

In Belgium we have a “friterie” culture. In every town you can find several “friteries”: kiosks where you can buy fries and meats. We’re the only country that has these. It’s even officially recognized as intangible heritage. There’s a specific recipe you need to follow to get the real Belgian fries. So, I’m sorry America, you have to taste the real deal in Belgium, WITH the real mayonaise, which is also totally different in the US.

well as a Belgian it hurts to say that French fries indeed are Parisian BUT we perfected the art of baking fries. It all depends how you make the fries . The French bake them usually once, while Belgium fries are always baked twice to make it crispy. So, you could call them French or Belgian fries based on how many times they are fried.

The difference lies in how you prepare them, I've eaten french fries all over the world alot of times but they just can't top those made in belgium for some reason, maybe I'm a bit patriotic after all

Spanish explorers are actually responsible for bringing potatoes to Europe in the first place.

A Spanish explorer described potatoes in a journal entry dating back to 1577 as "a kind of earth nut which, after it is boiled, is as tender as cooked chestnuts." It was pretty typical at the time in Spanish tradition to fry basically anything, so fries definitely could have been on the menu back in the 16th century.

Apparently, fries were first served in Galicia (an autonomous area of northwest Spain), and eventually made their way up to Belgium. Belgium, at the time, was called the Spanish Netherlands. So fries became popular in Belgium because the tradition moved through Spanish communities.

When I was a child, I always used to tell my family that french fries come from Belgium, but my sister doesn't believe that because her 'friends' and teachers say that french fries come from France.

Can't believe that many amount of people actually still believe that french fries come from France.

They didn't seem to believe me because I was the child and the youngest in the house.
