Moving from West Coast to East Coast has been different than our previous moves, but we're reallllly settling in here - stay tuned to the end for an exciting announcement! Moving from California to North Carolina feels more like moving to the South than it feels "East Coast" to me, and moving from San Francisco to Asheville has been amazing! Did you know some people call Asheville "Little San Francisco"? I talk about that too...

I'm from the west coast. When I moved to the South, I did feel the racism. People are homobhobic and very anti-vegan. As a lesbian Mexican woman, I had to move back to the West Coast were people are more welcoming.

I loved this video! My husband and I are moving from Southern CA to North Carolina in a year. Everything you've been describing is exactly why we want to move and we are just so excited! I would love to see some of the other homes that you and your husband looked at!

What moving service (if any) did you use to transport your belongings /furniture from CA to Asheville? We’re debating if we should bring or sell our furniture.

I live in the mountains also, but further south than Asheville. I see West Coasters all the time disparaging the South, and you can tell that most of them are talking about places they've never been. We get pretty sick of it. Meanwhile, we're having nice lives.

Make sure you get out of Asheville. Go see the waterfalls in Transylvania County and go on up to Cashiers and Highlands - they are rich towns, but go see Whitewater Falls and by all means walk underneath Dry Falls.

I think as far as authenticity in cuisine, you have to realize that Asheville is more about experimentation, and less about the indigenous people who created those cuisines actually moving to Asheville and opening restaurants. The Bay Area has a more diverse population because people move there from all over the world, and open restaurants. I think people in California forget that they are literally living in the most diverse place in the world. So nearly every other place is going to feel less diverse in comparison.

As far as Ikea, girl, you just moved to the furniture capital of North America. North Carolina manufactures mid-range to high-end furniture and has for generations. High Point hosts the major furniture markets twice a year and designers and buyers flock from all over the country to see what's new. Get thee to the Hickory Furniture Mart at least once. There is an Ikea in Charlotte, but people tend to be more partial to real furniture here.

I’m originally from the piedmont in North Carolina and in the town I lived there wasn’t really nothing much to do, had to drive 30 minutes to have some fun lol but now I live in Southern California and the vibe here feels more younger people, but there’s only one problem it just way more expensive makes it almost impossible to have you’re own place, which is very sad

I grew up all over the east coast so kinda similar to you. I was born in New York City, then move to North Carolina at age 11, then back to New York at 18, finished college in NC, and at 23 I moved to Jacksonville, Florida. The East Coast is pretty broad people forget that much of the East Coast is part of the south. North Carolina blends East Coast and Southern culture.

I’m 14 but I’ve lived in Asheville my whole life and it’s the my favorite place on earth even after traveling to California to Canada. I have some recommendations my friends parents own the chocolate lounge and it’s amazing. There’s a local ice cream company that a south Asheville and west Asheville locations which are amazing. Also the restaurants here are amazing here are some names. Homegrown, twisted laurel, juicy Lucy, Thai orchid and basically any Thai place.

Very helpful insights, Lauren! Thanks for sharing! I grew up in Pennsylvania and I think your stereotypes about the Northeast are actually pretty accurate and that's why I moved to the Pacific Northwest (Seattle and Portland) for a couple years. I moved to Raleigh, NC for girlfriend reasons last July and everyday I think about moving back to the PNW, even considered Anacortes! That's how I found your channel. Anyway, appreciate your analysis and I'm thinking I ought to spend more time exploring the hidden corners of Western NC to see if I can find a good spot to settle down...maybe Asheville might be the right place :) . It's hard because my family is here on the East coast but I really miss the Pacific Northwest...

I'm moving to eastern Washington State from the east cost in early October, if you're moving to the east coast you can't be overly sensitive (speaking only for North east) people are rude and are only worried about themselves. Not really a bad mindset if you ask me but maybe I'm biased.

It is a beautiful place! I'd always take the parkway to and from work and its really wonderful in the morning mists. I remember seeing a bear leaning on a guard rail along the highway as if he was waiting for a drink! It was pretty funny. I hope to move back soon, I miss it.
