Last week, I basically began to give up on a better 3nm or 4nm M2 Max chip for the 14 and 16" MacBook Pros coming here in the next couple of months.. But check out this new LEAK!

You guys have to make up your minds, one day you say it’s gonna be disappointing, next day you say it’s gonna be great and the next we were all wrong, like come on let’s be serious here.

I strongly believe the M2 Pro/Max/Ultra/Extreme will be based on the 4nm node of the A16 Bionic. I did some quick calculations here and they match the supposed results and look pretty decent:
CPU performance:
A16 Bionic (Multi-core): 5375
M2 Pro/Max (potential multi-core performance): 5375*2.75 = 14, 781 (15% improvement compared to M1 Max)
M2 Ultra = 14781*2 = 29, 582 (25% improvement compared to M1 Ultra)
M2 Extreme = 29, 582*2 = 59, 124

GPU performance:
A16 Bionic(5-core): 15391
M2 Pro (20-core): 15391*4 = 61, 564 (45% improvement compared to M1 Pro with 16-core)
M2 Max (38-core): 61, 584*1.9 = 117000 (65% improvement compared to M1 Max with 32-core)
M2 Ultra (76-core): 117000*1.6 = 187, 200 (70% improvement compared to M1 Ultra *taking into account scalability using the same UltraFusion architecture*)
M2 Extreme (152-core): 187, 200*1.6 = 299, 520

I still say it, more important than the hardware should be the software, compatibility, etc...., more windows apps running natively on mac, more games on mac, etc... That would be the real game changer, not just an overclocked 5nm M1, regarding the different clocks, maybe one is the m2 PRO 5nm and this newer one is M2 Max, and apple got away by just using higher clocks depending on the model.

I'm waiting for Apple Silicon to handle 8k 60fps like a knife going through butter before I update any of my macs. I'll likely be waiting for the M4 or M5.

same 5nm process, just higher clock speed

I've thought about it, and yeah the deals are good on the M1 Max. Two months ago I could have purchased a 16" for $500 off, and I placed the order and cancelled. Why did I cancel? Well, you save a little money on the front end, but you also lose it on the back end when you sell. I'd rather wait a few months, spend $500 more, and enjoy the extra performance knowing that I didn't buy at the end of the product cycle. I also said I wouldn't spend a lot of money on another computer until single core performance doubled, and 7 years later we're finally here. If tech keeps iterating this slowly then I'll be happy that I have the latest and greatest when I buy again. There was a noticeable single-core difference to me (though subtle) between the M1 Max and the M2 chips at the Apple store when I tested them. Single-core performance is important to me.

I just purchased the 14” m1; just can’t wait anymore. Let’s hope I done regret it.

Pass. The M1 chips are amazing by itself. Feels like iPhone updates now.

I am beginning to realize that these tech channels assume that people are interested in upgrading with every new product release. This has never been the case with me, even back when I had more income and greatly depended on the speed of my computer, I was still on a 2-3 year cycle for upgrades. These days, since computers are incredibly more powerful I have dropped back to no less than a 5 year cycle. I don’t think most people who have an M1 are looking to replace it with an M2. It won’t get tempting until we see substantial speed increases. It’s fun to keep track of the progress, but asking the question if it is worth it to upgrade from an M1 Max to an M2 Max is weird to me.

I'm waiting for the 15" MBA no matter what chip it has. My early 2008 15" MBP needs replacing ASAP.

Can't wait for Apple's 2023 products especially the macs❤️

Smaller nodes are getting more and more expensive and increasingly difficult to produce. So it's better if apple can extract the last bit of juice from 5nm!

Hasn't it always been the case with Apple Silicon that the real advantage is efficiency as in performance/watt rather than sheer horsepower?
I am writing in ignorance (as I don't know) but but I would imagine the Intel chip with Geekbench MC>20k uses quite a lot more power than any Apple equivalent.

Should I buy an M1 now or wait? Kind of need a new laptop pretty quick… not sure whether to struggle on with an old MacBook Air I have.

I'd expect more of a performance increase if this were using 3nm. Based on this leaked score, I think it could be using 4nm, or just 5nm but overclocked more than M2.
I'm perfectly happy with my M1 Pro 14", it's way more powerful than any other laptop with the same battery life, of which I can get up to around 14 hours, and it has the best display and speakers on any laptop, aside from the 16". I can now even emulate Wii u and Switch games on it with the release of Cemu and Ryujinx for Mac.

I am not a power user, just basic web browsing and stuff. But I plan to edit videos ( just for hobby ) and do some 3d modeling. My main concern is budget, but also want something that lasts 4 or 5 years and I can still edit videos and render 3d models without much of a hassle. Which lappy should I get!!!!

IMO, my gut feeling tells me that the twelve-core version is reserved for the M2 Max model.
