“How ADHD People See the World” #wait.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often misunderstood as a single condition characterized solely by hyperactivity and an inability to concentrate. However, ADHD is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests in various forms, and not all individuals with ADHD have trouble focusing. Understanding the different types of ADHD and their specific characteristics can provide a more nuanced perspective on the disorder.

Types of ADHD:

Predominantly Inattentive Presentation:
Symptoms: Individuals with this type of ADHD primarily struggle with inattentiveness. They may have difficulty sustaining attention, following through on tasks, organizing activities, and paying attention to details. They are often easily distracted and forgetful in daily activities.
Misconceptions: Because they may not exhibit hyperactive or impulsive behaviors, their difficulties are sometimes overlooked or misinterpreted as laziness or lack of effort.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation:
Symptoms: This type is characterized by hyperactivity and impulsivity. Individuals may fidget, talk excessively, interrupt others, and have trouble staying seated or waiting their turn. They may act without thinking and have difficulty controlling impulses.
Challenges: While hyperactivity and impulsivity are more noticeable, they can mask inattentiveness, leading to misdiagnosis or incomplete understanding of the individual’s challenges.
Combined Presentation:
Symptoms: Individuals with combined presentation exhibit both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. They struggle with maintaining focus and organization, as well as with hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Complexity: This type is the most common and can present a wide range of challenges, making it essential to tailor interventions to address both sets of symptoms.

It's like losing a round of tetris when someone is speaking to you. The blocks keep stacking up faster than you can clear them.

i have been diagnosed with adhd since i was 7. most of ADHD can be explained by what it actually functionally is CAUSED by: a chronic lack of dopamine in the brain. our reward system is a lot more stunted, and so we are always starving for dopamine. and we only get a release of dopamine from things we are already interested in- this causes "inattention and hyperactivity" but what those symptoms are is really just trying to get the smallest bit of dopamine from anything available. this is why we struggle to do boring tasks, but can focus on something we love for hours.

imagine starving to death, and having a plate of delicious food right in front of you, but being told you cannot eat that because it's the "wrong food, " and being forced to eat grey, flavorless nutrient paste. you would absolutely struggle. you choke down the paste as best as possible, but the smell of the forbidden, delicious food would always be there, enticing you. meanwhile everyone around you is eating a regular plate of food- and they think your plate of grey goo is also regular food- and asking you why it's taking you so long, saying that you must just be picky or lazy. meanwhile they cannot even understand how revolting the food you are eating is.

that's what trying to fit into society with adhd feels like.

and the solution is... to give us a drug that forced us to have enough dopamine to function. until it wears off, and we crash.

I don't experience the world like that but I have been diagnosed with ADHD. I don't have problems concentrating on one thing but I have problems concentrating on completing a series of unrelated steps like leaving the house. I tend to focus too much on whatever step I am doing and have a hard time focusing on my goal of getting out of the house. I also have autism.

It is hard when you ask for help with issues stemming from ADHD and the GP says you're an adult, you've made it this far, what do you think I can help you with. Right. That makes me feel so much better.

Thanks for posting about ADHD. It will be good when there is more awareness out there. No one picked it up in me as a kid, and I got diagnosed at 34 years old. I hope I can make up for a lot of time wasted and wasted potential throughout the years ❤

Attention inconsistencies - even for things you want to do - time blindness, difficulty with transitions, these are pretty common with ADHD.

Habits are difficult to maintain.
Time blindness - little to no sense of time passage, most noticeable when in hyperfocus mode, or when trying to complete a succession of tasks in a specific time period.

It is possible to be highly focused, just not perhaps what you are supposed to be focusing on at the moment. This state of hyperfocus can go on for some time. But then there are also times where can can't focus for anything, at least not on what you should be.

I (20f) recently got diagnosed with ADHD-combined type, meaning i struggle with all three aspects to the point where it impacts my life and functions severely.
Getting psychological/medical help for it has improved my life drastically.

As a person who struggles with adhd in the concentration department, this is so true : Some people (like me) deal with hyperfocus, in which you (sorry for the repetition) 'focus' for so long you don't even see the time passing ! This makes (me at least) difficult to organize and to divide time for finishing tasks or routines !
It would be nice to see more talking about the impulsiveness in adhd, i am interested to hear other people's opinions about this ❤

ADHD-I (predominantly inattentive type) can also concentrate to a heightened, even extreme degree, called hyperfocus. Unfortunately, hyperfocus isn’t recognized as a symptom in the DSM, which is a big part of why I made it through grad school (PsyD) figuring I didn’t have it. I was diagnosed a decade later.

On bad attention days I feel like my brain is a strainer and what people are saying/what is happening around me is water. Everyone else has bowls that catch the water but for me everything just flows through. I can't try harder to catch the water because regardless of how I hold the strainer, it still flows through. Medication is like a cloth I put in the strainer. It stops some of the water and soaks some of it up, but a lot of water still escapes. It sucks.

I recently discovered I have ADHD because I got diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) by a psychiatrist. It seems that my GAD masked my ADHD because I was forced to focus & get good grades by my oarents & that's how I got GAD

As someone with ADHD, I strongly believe that this condition is actually an error in the brain's executive function center that can cause many symptoms, including inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsion, but it isn't limited to those things. Those symptoms are the most visible to others, and what most clinicians are fixated on treating, so that's why the disorder is named ADHD. This model is very outdated, in my opinion. I think the condition should be renamed executive dysfunction disorder or something similar so that it covers all the bases, and eliminates some of the bias both the public and clinicians often have that lead to misdiagnoses, over or undermedication, bullying, and so on. ADHD affects far more than just attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness; it can have a severe impact on planning, time management, prioritization, sensory processing, hearing, social interactions, etc. I believe everyone with ADHD can experience symptoms of all the "types" currently outlined, it's just a matter of how they manifest and to what extent. I think some people have these symptoms insignificantly enough to be considered subclinical. I hope we completely reframe how we talk about this disorder soon so people stop dismissing us and reducing our experiences to the few symptoms that have a more visible impact on others as opposed to the many that can have a severe impact on us.

I had an ADHD test, and I always thought it was bullcrap because they just sat me in front of a computer and made me do some memory typa game test, I don't even remember what it was exactly, something about it would show me a coloured shape and then I had to say if the next one matched the colour or shape, something like that, anyway, they said I didn't have it because I scored too high, but like, that was the only test they did for it??? And it didn't focus on any parts other than attention span, I saw the documents and it basically was like 'hmmmm, they don't meet the criteria for being ADHD because they scored better than someone with ADHD would, definitely not ADHD lmao' I'm not even sure if I would have it or anything, I relate to alot of ADHD things, but I ain't gonna self diagnose or anything, I just thought that whole thing was bullcrap, because when I was getting assessed with autism it felt like they were taking that one a whole lot more serious

No have trouble getting stuff done but if i get hyper focused and enter a flow state for things like work, games, books, and etc. I sometimes end up neglecting to basic things like eating and sleeping.
And
ADHD being genetic and some family members having ADHD. I probably should see a doctor myself, but i also said that too myself like 3 months ago but completely forgot until i saw this video it'll be a while before i get officially diagnosed.

The latest DMC got rid of ADHD subtypes. It's now about presentation, (so PI - presenting inattentive etc.), because while most have a dominants presentation, people almost always also exhibit the other symptoms more regular than the general population. For example, I'm mostly ADHD(PI), but I do have bouts of hyperactivity and impulsivity, that are obviously worse than in healthy neurotypical people.
