The EU is currently in the process of agreeing their Multi-Annual Financial Framework. This is essentially the EU's budget and agrees on how much each country will contribute to the total budget. However, this time the EU nations can't all agree on contribution levels, or what the money should be spent on.

TLDR is all about getting you up to date with the news of today, without bias and without filter. We want to give you the information you need, so you can make your own decision.

I think it's only a temporary problem. Setting up a budgeting plan for 7 years is actually a big deal, no wonder it comes with difficulties. Give the Council some time, they will come to an agreement.

Budgets are always decided at the last minute in the EU. First everybody needs to show their voters how much they are fighting for them. And at the last minute they make a compromise. That compromise has to have 'a win' for every single country and must be acceptable for the EU parliament. These things take time. It will not lead to the EU's collapse. Just like it didn't 7 years ago. And just like it won't 7 years in the future. I garantue you that we will see the exact same discussion then.

Pretty ironical how the most spending countries in the EU, Sweden largest net contributor, Netherlands largest net contributor of %national gross are called the frugal 4. They should call the net receivers the greedy countries, that would be a lot more fair in this case.

As a Dutchman: no problem with spending money on southern and eastern countries to help them further develop their economies. What should be killed of is corruption ( mainly but not only in the south and eastern part of Europe) and bad spending (for instance the agricultural sector in France). Europe should 100 % focus on sustainable development in all fields (energie, agriculture, fisheries etc) and should also focus on improvement of their own functioning.

EU is discussing budget, amongst more important things like the Green Deal, but to think that 10 billions are a "big hole" for a union with 18.8 Trillion (with a T) GDP is laughable.

You keep saying “the commission”, but you are using the logo of the council

I am in France and agree with the Frugal 4. EU GDP has been going up anyway, even if slower than global GDP, plus not raising the ceiling would add pressure for the EU to be more efficient with its budget. This is temporary, soon they'll reach an agreement, either around 0.05% or by changing some policies about the discount or who gets more of the benefits.

Whow didn’t realise Poland just takes money. What excuse do they have for their dislike of the EU? Shouldn’t they refuse the handout first

In a nutshell:
1. EU got 15% smaller
2. The contributions to the budget therefore got smaller.
3. STILL member states who recieves money wanted to INCREASE the budget. Which is insane as the EU got SMALLER which logically leads to a smaller budget.
4. And the solution presented by the countries who recieve money? That the now even fewer countries who are contributing to the budget both gives even more money AND pick up the contributions that was made by the UK. Small countries like Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark etc needed to increase their contributions by 30-40% which is an absolute joke....

It's cool that rldr news encourages discussion, but you should level up a bit more the questions you use to do so. Now you just encourage noise and people vomiting opinions. For instance, frame questions less dramatic and more towards critical thinking not gut opinions... We have enough of that in youtube

as a Dutchman I wouldn't mind a slight increase increase, I'm just not convinced that any of it should go to Poland or Hungry.

As a Dutch person, my problem is more with the autocratic, undemocratic direction some countries are taking, especially Poland and Hungary, that makes me reluctant to want to support them. If they turn around and also help solve the issues with the Syrian refugees and such, then I suppose a solution can be found.

That is actually in my opinion good for the European Union. They should tackle such issues.

It‘s quite simple: if countries that are net recipients do not want to create substantial Euroscepticism in net contributor countries, they had better find a way of doing things with a bit less money. Especially considering how uncooperative these countries have been on other issues such as migration.

I am curious how this will end. the Dutch parliament has already voted that no more than 1% is allowed but the EU.

I very much doubt the Swedish government can let an increase happen. They're in a risky position, sitting under a constant threat of a vote of no confidence which they can easily lose (it's a minority government). In addition to that, the budget is already strained, and adding more to it most likely wouldn't work.

As well, the opposition would use it as additional ammunition against the current government and PM from now until the next election in 2, 5 years.

It happens every 7 years... They all agree eventually.

Of all the EU members, I wouldn’t have said these 4 countries would not agree to the budget.
I can understand where they’re coming from.

Britons... always placing themselves at the centre of the world. No, budget issues do not originate in Brexit; budget issues happen every time the previous MFF period runs out.

For all the brexiteers thinking this is the collapse of the EU, did the UK collapse last time it had budget issues?
