I bought a used, very old 5550. After getting it professionally cleaned and tuned, it has been a very consistent and forgiving workhorse. I push it much harder than the instructions suggest and it rarely gives me trouble. I can go through 2 layers of a denim hem and cross over an 8 layer section then back to 2 layers, the machine doesn't show any change in the good stitch quality or tension variation. Sewing through 3 layers of seatbelt webstrap onto 30oz canvas is no problem. Then changing over to a tee shirt pocket repair is too easy. It's such a great, versatile, strong machine. Thanks !

Its not about the machines we use but rather the skilled person using the machines.

Hi John,

I use a 69bonded nylon thread for this machine. The needles sizes vary from 16 to 21 depending on what I am sewing. Typically there is an 18 on the machine for most items I am working with. Thanks for watching.
Hope this helps, Kim

Thank you so much. I was under the impression that smallest needle size I could use on my 1541s was a 135x17 Size 20 (125Metric)

Hi Kim, I'm an experienced seamstress and just recently began sewing with leather and using 1" foam sheets to make padded leather drum bags. The feeder plate on my domestic Bernia is not cutting in.  I'm looking for advice on what type of industrial machine to purchase.  I know they're expensive and don't want to get too much machine for my purpose.  I don't need it to make shoes or saddles but DO need to sew through a significant THICKNESS.  Please you!

I have the DNU 1541. Do you use that to put in invisible zippers in throw pillows?

Hi Kim, I'm glad I seen your video. I am getting ready to purchase a Juki and I'm trying to decide between the Juki DNU1541NS and the LU1508NS. I am mainly making leather handbags, wallets, leather bracelets, and belts. I was told by the repairman at a dealership that the 1508 was a heavier duty machine than the 1541 also, the 1508 is a top loading bobbin and the 1541 is a bottom loading bobbin, does this make a difference? I was also wondering being you are use to working with these machines, which one you would recommend between the two? The machine you was showing in the video after the model 1541 that you said was more quiet, can you tell me what the model number that machine was? I didn't know if you had the 1508 or not but if you did, I was going to get your opinion on both models and see which one you liked the best and which one you thought would benefit me the most with what I'm doing. This is confusing trying to decide between the two. This is my first walking foot machine and just wanting to make the right choice. Thank you so much for any advice you could offer me on these machines. Tammy

Kim, thanks for the video, I got a Juki 5550n (en route as I write this) with a snap on walking foot. Do you think this will handle upholstery fabric?

Thanks,
Sheila

hii :) I am new to leather crafts, used my ordinary sewing machine (not industrial) but it didn't work very well with layering leather, i am making bags so when i decided to purchase a Juki all I found in the store was a non walking foot or a roller foot machines, I also want to work with natural thick leather so would a non working foot work with it and if it won't can I purchase a walking foot piece or should it come pre-installed in the machine ? :) please help

Hey Kim!! Great videos! On your Juki DNU 1541S, do you prefer a clutch motor or the DC Servo motor? I am looking at buying one and all I have sewn on is an older Consew with a clutch motor. Curious to know what you prefer and what the benefits are to each? Thanks!!  :)

what is your typical thread sizes and types that you would recommend and what needle size is required for those?  Home machines are supposed to handle nylon bonded 69 with a 16, 18 or even up to a 20 needle, but I have tried tex 70/69 thread with an 18 needle and found it problematic.
