I always thought that when Gandalf upgraded to Gandalf the White status, he ended up going the Tolkien equivalent of factory reset before he regained his memories of Gandalf the Grey.

Given how its been almost 2 decades from since I last read the books, I thought he'd just forgotten his Mortal name.
Being killed by a fallen angel and sent to your angelic boss to get a fix up and promotion "outside of space and time" then meeting up with talking tree people who take almost an entire day to say good morning to each other will probably do that to you.

I thought that gandlaf died fighting the balrog and then was resurrected becuase his death was so noble or something but because the afterlife exists outside of middle earth he forgot everything just like he forgot about his life as a maiar as a wizard

Plus the fact that no-one he encountered after he died on Zirakzigil and before meeting the three lads in Fangorn would have called him Gandalf. This is the first time in his new life he's ever heard the name.

Lols - the human form he was in died, his spirit went back to Valinor where he was his Maiar self Olorin. With some vague memories of being in Middle Earth for 6, 000 years, doing wizard type stuff - just like he had vague memories of being in Valinor when he was in Middle Earth. Eru thought he’s the ultimate bad boy and the other four had gone off the radar or gone bad - powered him up and sent him back to Loth Lorien.

I always assumed it was because of the time he spent with eru that he forgot the name gandalf. Outside of time and space could feel like a life age of the earth, and I would think eru addressed him as Olorin.

I often wonder, , , , didn't he run into Treebeard and the hobbits first ? Wouldn't they have called him Gandalf ? But in the chapter 'The White Rider', I don't remember if he said they actually met in the forest. Or just that the hobbits had met Treebeard.
