Christopher Lee was also considered the role for Gandalf before taking the role of Saruman instead. Due to him being too old to do certain things like ride horses. But he still made a great and irreplaceable Saruman none the less. Just like Ian McKellen did for Gandalf. So it all worked out for the best.

The cast made the trilogy what it is…..like a recipe (although unknown at the conception), any change in the “ingredients” would have altered the resulting success. And because the success was so overwhelming, any changes would most likely have resulted in a less successful film 🤔
