"Romantic machine guns, nuking the audience" That's perfect. I didn't know much about this composer but the tears have been coming down listening to these beautiful and heart wrenching melodies.

The film makers really knew what they were doing when deciding to end this documentary with that final descent from the choral basses to the earth-shaking low note of B flat

I find it interesting that people generally deplore Tolstoy's turn towards religion and politics. I suspect it is because it makes them feel uncomfortable, especially well-fed BBC presenters. Without Tolstoy there would probably be no Gandhi or Martin Luther King: he gave us a thoroughly well thought out and articulated theory of non-violent resistance. He wanted and argued for social justice throughout Russia during the repressive Tsarist regimes.

Why do composers bother to learn music theory when journalists will come along and insist said composer must have been under duress to have written something so sad? Composers manipulate notes at their pleasure. Journalists will always be overly mellow dramatic.
