PLEASE READ if you are going to do this.

We made meals that my grandma could grab too. She would just take them to her room all the time and we had to be vigilant or she'd end up with pests. We would always have to distract her with a walkabout while someone went in and fished out the remains. Otherwise it wasn't just pests, she'd make herself sick eating rotting food. And yes, she literally tried to eat a bowl of rotting mac and cheese that was covered in mold once. She didn't have the capacity to understand it would make her sick. We had to be REALLY vigilant.

If you follow this advice, make sure you keep track of it. Please. @DementiaCareblazers please update your amazing followers with the risks of this kind of behavior. Please Please Please.

My mom always declined food also. One great caregiver would leave plates of cut-up treats all over the place, so smart!

My husband eats late at night. I keep frozen home cooked options in the freezer. I also cut up apples soaked in lemon juice, his favorite, for his snacking. We seldom eat together.

My answer for the last 10 years is to say Joan your best friend made you this special nutritional meal and will be very happy if you finish it .This works without a fuss for 6 glasses of fluid a day as well as her 3 meals a day

I eat ice cream “late” all the time & yes, Jeni’s is the best. Then Salt & Straw, then McConnell’s, probably in that order.

Slap my forehead! My mother is 94 and still never stops cruising her townhouse, cleaning her kitchen nightly (her sleep cycle is crazy (waking at noonish and often up till 2, 3, 4 am) after I leave. And aside from me visiting (4+ hrs per day) we have coffee and coffee cake before her Am medication then stockings and us packing up her laundry that needs washing (I always plead for more laundry for my very large washer, is how she is then happy to not see it as another burden on me- I’m her only child so she’s overly focused on that, Im 64 not 4 I say) …The putting food out is great solution, even preparing sandwiches and putting into clear containers is another thing to get them their fruits and vegetables (precooked) encouraging them with their favorites.

What should I do if my mom keeps eating? She has her 3 meals plus snacks? How can I stop someone with dementia keep opening the refrigerator?

I have a bowl of fruit and nuts out on the counter so she can see it. I prepare 3 meals but it’s difficult to gauge how hungry someone is on a day to day basis. My brother also has early onset Alzheimer’s and he’ll eat when he visits too. This way I’m never worried about them being hungry because they see it and eat it. Both are on the thin side so for me this is a great strategy to help with getting enough calories.

Its not true for everyone. My husband lost 25lbs when his caregiver did this and he was starving! This blanket statement is a dangerous thing to do or apply outside of your mother.
