What effect does adding or multiplying have on the mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation of a data set? We discuss this topic and an example in this free math video tutorial by Mario's Math Tutoring.

0:26 What effect does adding or subtracting have on the mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation.
0:40 What happens when you multiply the data set by a factor.
1:04 Example 1 we calculate mean, median, mode, range, deviation
2:18 Example 2 we add 1 to the data points and notice the change
3:20 Example 3 we multiply all the data points by 1.10

Thanks!
Question! When multiplying / dividing datasets each with their own standard deviations (and unfortunately it's unknown if the datasets are independent or not; the very POINT is to find that out), how do the standard deviations (or variances) behave?? I know that when multiplying by a constant, the stdev is also multiplied, and when adding or subtracting, Var(X+Y)=Var(X)+Var(Y) so sqrt(X^2+Y^2) is the new stdev. But what about multiplying...

in specific: for example, protease activities (average and stdev for a few replicates per strain) divided by protein concentrations (average and stdev for 5 replicates). So, two different standard deviations - how are they handled when divided/multiplied?? "Like when multiplying with constants" is probably close but not quite the right answer...

Hi
The video was great thanks for your help
But I wanted to ask will there be overall standard deviation in case 2 ( mean shift )?
If so, how should we calculate it ?
Thanks again!

Does that apply to any mean and std of a distribution (e.g. exponential, normal, log-normal...etc)?

If we add same no. To all the observations will it affect the mean deviation or not? Because in the video u talked about range and standard deviation only

isn't 1.4 x 1.10 = 1.54 and not 1.56?

Do you have tutorials for standard score (z scores) and t scores, SAT scores and IQ scores?

What is the effect on the SD when you add one number?

DOES VARIANCE HAVE A SIMILAR EFFECT AS SD ? (I.E. AFFECTED WHEN MULTIPLIED OR DIVIDED AND NOT WHEN ADDED OR SUBTRACTED)`

What happens if you divide? Does standard deviation divide as well?

Suppose we have mean and median of 5 observations be 7 and 8 respectively. What if I add 1 to both mean and median. What will be new mean and median?

Hello . I think the standard deviation is wrong. Instead of dividing it with n (total no.) it must be divided by n-1

why does the standard deviation not multiply by positive K when every datum is multiply by negative K? K is a constant

what if we multiply by negative 1. the range will change by negative 1
