Watch Before Visiting a Katana Shop #Shorts

One thing I absolutely want you to do in Japan… Visiting a museum or katana shop to see a real katana. In order for you to enjoy a katana to its fullest, there are three things you should look out for.

1. The whole shape
Depending on how curved the katana is, you can see which era that katana was made (or what era’s style it was based on) Generally, the more curved the katana is, the older the style is.

2. Hamon wave patterns
Hamon are the patterns on the blade, that are created by applying dirt (clay) on the cutting edge to make it harder before the final procedure of hardening. Depending on the region and swordsmith, there are many different designs.

3. Jigane blade surface
Not just the Hamon but the surface of the blade has beautiful patterns like tree rings. These patterns are born due to the fold forging of the steel. The Jigane also has many designs depending on the region and swordsmith.

One more thing that so many peoples make this mistake :
Never touch the real sharp Katana's blade with your hand. Because it can damage and rust the Katana.

But for Iaido or replica dull Katana it's ok.

That does actually justify Japan allowing battle ready Katana under the category of art.

This is wonderful. One of my best memories from visiting Tokyo was being allowed to hold a katana at a shop near to one of Tokyo's many beautiful museums (Suprise, Japan has a long and rich history filled with gruesome parts and many beautiful and thought provoking areas).

It was actually pretty wonderful.

If I was rich, I would definitely own a Katana. Beautiful blade. Spiritual even.
