I replaced mine with paracord and use it to tie the weapon to the scabbard so it can't fall out even if it's upside down from maneuvers. I only tie a doubled half bow so I can pull on one string to loosen it to draw.

Just bought a new sword and the string is very long when fully unwoven, the small part is for tying it to my waistband but the rest I knew would have been used as a tourniquet or binding.
