Back in the 1970's the aircraft industry used glass beads to clean internal aircraft engines parts. Then they discovered that the glass beads could not be completely removed from the parts because some became partially embedded in the aluminum. Then some of the glass beads began showing up in the oil causing dangerous damage to the bearings. They then discontinued any use of glass bead blasting in any internal aircraft engine parts. They then discovered that using soda to blast the parts cleaned them perfectly and since the soda is water soluble, it can be removed completely with high pressure clean water blast. That eliminated the glass bead in the oil problem.
