BEST way to connect a Generator to your House…⚡️

🏃‍♂️ Everyone raced to buy a generator but rarely is anyone able to plug directly into their house.

📞 Schedule an electrician to come out and install a transfer switch (My favorite) or at least a power inlet box with a interlock kit.

Interlock switch is my preference. Cheaper, still plenty safe, and not limited to a certain number of switches

I prefer the interlock switch. I can power whatever I want and I'm not limited to 8 breakers.

I just have a 50kVA three phase diesel generator on standby with automatic start and ATC. Bought it second hand and built it myself as I'm an electrical engineer. Oh and I also live on the Northern Europe

To say using a transfer switch means you don't have to worry about backfeeding the power line is false. If the tranfer switch fails to only allow one power source it will backfeed on the grid. The interlock is actually more likely to guarantee you don't backfeed the grid because it requires two breakers to fail to allow backfeed on the grid.

Thanks for discussing the pros and cons. So often I hear the pros of the transfer switch but hated that it limits what circuits I can use. I have an interlock on my panel and 50 amp plug outside for my 12.5KV portable generator. Living in FL, after a hurricane if I don't get the A/C back on I might as well have gotten blown away by the storm after my wife starts in.

We install a lot of stand by generators witch run on natural gas, they have an automatic whole home transfer switch so when the power goes out the generator starts and switches. Only downside is it’s gonna run you about 10 to 15 grand by the time it’s installed.

Standby Generator with automatic transfer switch is best but you're looking at a 15-20 thousand dollar bill depending on the size of generator you pick 😬

You can install a soft start device on the condenser and run a central air system, plus room for other necessities, off of a portable generator. The A/C, gas furnaces, and heat pump will work fine. Just don't try running any electric heat strips.

I prefer a manual interlock over an electrical one. Electrical can always, albeit very unlikely, can fail or be wired incorrectly.

An inlet box is capable of providing power to the entire home so long as you get the proper box for your home i.e. 30amp 40amp 60amp. If it provides power to the entire breaker panel it has the potential to power the entire home

Where are u guys seeing an interlock kit for $100+ ? I found my square D interlock plate for $18 and im gonna wire everything myself for like $250 myself, including the 50amp outlet, 50amp breaker, 240 cord plug in and 6/3 romex.

Easy, I installed a 120v only sub-panel right next to my main panel and pull all my 120v wires I wanted on my solar batteries, installed a 80 amp DPDT Contactor in the Sub-Panel. Pulled 8 ga cable from a 40 amp 220v breaker in my Main Grid Breaker Box and tie into the two connectors on the Contactor; pulled a 10/8 GA cable from my 120v Solar Inverter to the same contactor; put a small switch in the sub-panel to power the contactor when battery power needed. Mine has been working perfectly since the Great Texas Fubar. Spouse knows how to flip the switch to turn the Lights back on. 10-12 hours later one of us can walk out to the generator and press the start button if the sun's not shining. ALL our 120v stuff are on the system. The Contactor IS the Interlock. Batteries can be charged from Grid, Generator or Solar. We use a 3.5KW 120v Invertor/generator. 4 Marine batteries from Wally World wired 24v Cheap MPPT 60amp solar charge controller, 2 24 volt. If grid power comes back on it will charge the batteries. So if the power is intermittent we do nothing.

My emergency generator powers my A/C. Soft start for the win. I just don't run the dryer at the same time.

Upgrade to ducted mini splits, get an air fryer, led lights everywhere, and a 10kw running generator. Ppssshhh, nah, I'm golden😂

My generator is 12kw. Definitely will run my A/C.

Just get a manual change over switch it's way safer and way cheaper than any thing else you have there

Where can you buy an interlock kit for 30$??? This must be a really old video

Just use the interlock and be careful. The chances of a lineman not knowing there is power present is zero to none.

I connected a transfer switch. And I regret it I am limited to just those circuits versus alternating with all available circuits and I can choose

I can power my whole house with a generator, even if you have an interlock make sure to turn off the main breaker.
