Finding and Repairing Gas Leaks Before our House Burns Down - DIY Home Building

We found a big gas leak in our flexible gas line. The leak was in a manifold set up for gas system. We detected the leak by using soapy water in a spray bottle. Wherever a gas leak is the soapy water will create a lot of bubbles. We took apart the manifold and the brass fittings on the flexible gas line and were able to fix the leak. We pressurize the system to 20 pounds and it held for over 20 minutes. In fact it has been holding for several days now. I think our gas lines are one 100% leak free.

When you enclose the walls, I would make an access door to that manifold, just in case. If I couldn't have the connections of the Stainless steel tubing exposed or accessible, i would use iron pipe.

Big win with no leaks on the gas line. Take everything you can get lol. Have a great weekend. Stay safe

You can also use teflon tape and pipe dope together with good results Martin. An old plumber taught me this. Put the tape on first, then brush on the pipe thread solution. Just be sure to add it only to the NPT only. Any brass fitting with flared and/or ferral type fitting never add either tape or any type of pipe solution.

I use to work for American Leak Detection and always used tape (yellow for gas ) and pipe dope. Glad to see you got it fixed👍

Good morning Martin and Julie. Hopefully you will have better luck today. 🇯🇲👍👍

Good you use pipe dope. In Ontario Ca. you can't use teflon tape on gas or propane fittings have to use pipe dope.

When it rains, it pours and it's so true. Hopefully lots more wins to come to make up for it.

Yes! No leaks! It's coming along. Sure will be nice to have that part out of the way.

I was having the same problem with Teflon tape. The guy in the plumbing section at Lowe’s explained that some time ago they cut the thickness of the tape. He said if I used multiple wraps it would work just like before. I found that to be helpful in my applications.

Beautiful thing is that if you know that it holds at 20psi then you know it will hold at the 1/2 pound or so working pressure that the gas regulator operated at. Good job

Martin, that is great news but I'm concerned about the flex pipe going into the left side of that manifold - even though it doesn't leak it looks like the pipe isn't going in straight and secure. Please try and straighten it, recheck for leaks before you seal up the wall! Wouldn't want it to catastrophically pop out at a future date.

I usually use Teflon tape and dope together from the beginning, never had a leak ever. I also would have put that manifold in the wall with an access door for the future. Glad it's all working good.

i am happy for you, in reality there is nothing better than to build up your independence like you do with a house and knowledge of building and repairing stuff, and to do it with a supportive family is the best of all.

You guy's are doing a great job. Thank you for sharing. Gas lines is a serious thing not to mes around with. I would secure all the lines and the connections to prevend vibration by mother earth. We all know that houses and buidings are shaking and vibrating because of mother earth. Most of the time we don't even know or feel these vibrations. With securing everything the chanches of cracks in the fittings and sealings are reduced to a minimum. Also .... make shure that there is now tension on the fittings because they can give the same results.

I would secure that manifold with clamps and assure you have access to it once the building is complete. It looks great and in the end, it's probably better that you re-fitted it with the pipe dope to get a better overall seal.
