Slip Mode is a feature that allows you scratch, loop, or trigger cues during playback while preserving the original playback of the track
Playing around with Slip mode is one of my favorite techniques to do because it’s an easy way to show off,
and the thing about it is that you don’t really need a lot of skills to do it.
All you really need is a good sense of timing, rhythm and preparation.
Speaking about preparation, this tutorial will tackle how to use this feature on Rekordbox DJ and Serato
Let’s first set up our vinyl break system.
to set it up on rekordbox DJ, all you gotta do is
Go your settings, then click controller, then scroll down to vinyl speed adjust,
and on the touch/brake area bring both knobs to the 12 o clock position.
To set it up on Serato,
Click the tool icon
In the DJ Preferences menu,
Locate BRAKING
Then at the Stop time
Bring the knob to the 9 o clock position
So now that we’ve set up our vinyl break system and know how to activate slip mode
let’s finally learn 3 techniques that utilize all of its features effectively in a mix.
do some tricks on a track
First activate slip mode on the deck that you want to manipulate,
Now the are 3 things that I like to do, and I always do them on the beat down beat of the song,
1. Play/Pause Break
When the track is playing press the play/pause button.
Since we set it up, it’ll make this cool vinyl break down sound effect *SHOW*
Next up we have
2. Backspin
When the track is playing, simply backspin the track. *SHOW*
Next up we have
3. Baby Scratch
When the track is playing, grab the platter and do a quick baby scratch. A baby scratch is when you push and pull a track. To learn how to do a baby scratch for real, please check the description for a scratch tutorial playlist. *SHOW*
4. Cue Play
This trick requires you to have cue points in your track. And placing them in cool sounding areas is best to make this trick sound dope.
So I have a cue point here, and it sounds like this…
To do this trick, simply press the cue point, when the track is playing. *SHOW*
Final Thoughts:
To make using Slipmode really shine, make sure to fix your timing and to mix things up.
Don’t just do one technique but do all, and make sure not to over do it. It’s best to not repeat the trick consecutively, instead, mix it up and do it at certain points in the track.
