Aviaries provide protection for your pet birds as well as giving them space in which to fly. Here are some guidelines for building one.
Step 1: Decide on the size
Decide on the size of your aviary. A structure that is 12 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 5 feet tall accommodates 20 parakeets.
Step 2: Choose a location
Choose a location. Select a place away from noisy streets but visible from your house.
Step 3: Cement in four posts
Cement four corner posts in the ground. Connect the posts at the top and bottom by 2-by-4 runners.
Tip
Prepare a concrete foundation for the aviary if you will be housing birds that can be harmed by parasites in the soil.
Step 4: Construct a shelter
Construct a shelter at one end of the aviary. Cover it with a sloped roof and place perches inside for the birds to roots on.
Tip
The shelter should be large enough to afford protection from the elements, but small enough to leave adequate flight space in the aviary for the birds.
Step 5: Install double doors
Install double doors at the end of the aviary opposite to the shelter to prevent escapes.
Step 6: Add wire cloth to the sides and roof
Cover the walls and roof of the aviary with galvanized, welded-wire cloth. Select a wire spacing and gauge that accommodates the birds you are housing.
Tip
Cover the wire at the base of the aviary with soil to keep other animals from entering.
Step 7: Add finishing touches
Add a birdbath, a bird feeder, trays with grit, a mineral block, and a water dispenser. Now you are ready to provide a home for your feathered friends!
Did You Know?
In 2007, biologists implanted a satellite transmitter in a bar-tailed godwit bird and tracked it as it flew 7,250 miles in eight days without stopping.
