As a guy that has modded tons of pedals over the years.Just like the Tube Screamer hype, I put the difference in what you hear purely to component value differences.Especially the pots which can be plus or minus 20%.

The sonic differences between the 3 units attend to the tolerances (20%) of the potenciometers. The same position of the knobs should be a start but then should finish fine tuning moving the knobs by ear if you really want to match the same sound. Another important thing to consider is the internal EQ Master trim pot. You also should sum it to the equation if you want to be fair with the 3 units.

So these are similar to the ever so coveted Klons and Dumbles, in that they each have their own unique sound, albeit subtle for the most part.
