I found a useful reason for the standard system and the metric system to coexist and it only took me 60ish years to figure it out .

Sometimes when you break a waterpump bolt off in an engine block if it breaks at the shank just right all ya gotta do is know if it's metric or standard and use the opposite system as an in-between. That way you don't have to redrill the hole. You just leave the threaded portion of the bolt in the hole and tap it with the in-between opposite size corse thread tap one step bigger. Presto! Day saved . Crisis averted. No need to panick. Fixed in minute.

This works more often than you think because the most common place for a bolt to break is just above the threads. It's the weakest part of the bolt and antifreeze and rust can really do a number on waterpump bolts.

Just leave the broken portion of the bolt in the block it won't bother anything.

One way to avoid the whole dilemma is to carefully apply a little heat to each bolt with a micro torch but that is more of an art than an exact science and you should practice on machinery in a junkyard before you try it on anything valuable. Too much heat and your dinked so go very slow and only use exactly the right amount of heat while you check the bolt frequently to see if it will move . It could take 50 to 60 applications in short bursts on the bolt and surrounding metal before it budges .it might even take a 100 or more trys but totally worth it.
