When it’s time for a repair, the dentist must be sure that material is used in that repair is compatible with the tooth.

Most filler materials, especially adhesive type fillers, can swell or shrink during curing. If not carefully controlled with the formulation, this dimensional change can itself cause damage to the tooth.

In this video, Darryl explains how strain gage sensors are used to quantify filler material compatibility, but these sensors are also used to characterize tooth properties and how teeth respond to force inputs (like that popcorn kernel you just crunched down on!).
