This is actually a very fascinating historical fact! Unfortunately, it was not always coffins stacked on top of eachother, but just plain human remains. I’m not sure the exact name for this, but I remember my history teacher jokingly referring to it as “corpse lasagna”. These types of burials were seen more often during the 18th century during the mass outbreaks of plague, because there was too many people dying at one time, and not enough space to properly bury each and every one of them. Hence, the corpses were stacked up to save on space. The more you know!

Fun fact : this also happened in jewish ghettos during the middle ages and renaissance as lords would generally give very little land for Synagogues to be built forcing Rabbies to make do with the space they had.
