Making people feel comfortable in portraits

In this video, I discuss techniques for making people feel comfortable in portraits. Knowing how to pose people is just one very minor step to creating portraits that show people at their very best.

Thanks so much for your support and feedback!

This dude knows what he’s talking about 100 percent

Love that you tell viewers that you are YOU and you know how to not only be comfortable with that, but also make the model comfortable with you and the session. New folks think these vibes just happen. Thank you for sharing.

It all starts with the way the photographer is with the person. That will reflect on your photo shoot. I have had major celebrity, musicians, politicians, in my face. You better be chilled out! Or it will not work. That comes from a lot of experience! This was not in a gallery or a thing like that. It was right in the moment. That's the way I think photographers should learn. I call that real photgraphy! Ps. Nice background you have their for a photo!

I agree 100% about explaining what I am doing when taking portraits. Just talking with clients about the process helps alot. As I say camera don't bite, only clicks and beeps😊

One of your best videos, yet, Daniel. As a portrait/commercial photographer of 40 years myself, it took me a long time to figure out what you so perfectly described in just a few minutes. Keep up the great work!

Hi Daniel! I'm so glad that you not only responded to me in Twitter but you also did a video. I'm very much like you in being a loner until I get my camera in my hand and then it's a different world. I love taking a person from hating their photos to loving being photographed.

Very interesting comments. Achieving balance between creepy and competent is often tricky. Thanks for the video.

Very useful advice! I have experience often people just behaving very stiff.

This was great. I've seen a lot of videos about portraits and posing ideas, but not that many talk about how to make the subject comfortable and part of the process. Thanks.

Wise words and useful info. I like to get people involved to put them at ease, my old Lunasix F did not have a remote trigger so i would show my subjects how to use it which helped me and put them at ease as they were distracted by the task given them. It proved fun, now due to changed vision i use a newer one with bigger numbers and it can be used by cable. I look forward to your next Grip video. Thanks Daniel

Really, really good video. I'd love to see a video of you and a model doing a short session.
I do a lot of street photography where I meet someone, chat for a bit and then take some pictures.
In a way, the biggest challenge is slowing down enough to get it right technically.
Anyways, thanks for the insights.

Hey Danial,
Thanks for the all the content. I watch all of the stuff on this channel and most of the live stuff you do with Adorama. But some of those lives are just too long. I liked this video very much because it was not about the tech and lighting and posing. I like videos that are beyond the basics of how to... make a portrait. Thanks for the insights of how to get good results. Lots of content on the internet about the tech. Not as many about how to do a successful portrait shoot once you know the tech.
