"A Song for You" is a song written and originally recorded by rock singer and pianist Leon Russell for his first solo album Leon Russell, which was released in 1970 on Shelter Records. A slow, pained plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover, the tune is one of Russell's best-known compositions. Russell not only sings and plays piano on the recording, but also plays the tenor horn that is accompanying. It has been performed and recorded by over 200 artists, spanning many musical genres. Elton John has called the song an American classic.Merry Clayton in 1971, Carmen McRae in 1972, also in 1972, on June 22, 1972, The Carpenters released “ A Song for You” signed with the Record Production Company of; A & M Studios, in Los Angeles, and ranked Number 26, in 1972, on the Billboard Charts. Aretha Franklin in 1974 as well as Donny Hathaway and the Temptations have recorded highly acclaimed renditions. One of the first versions of the song that brought it broader attention was by Andy Williams, whose single peaked at number 29 on the adult contemporary chart and number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971 Ray Charles recorded a version that earned him the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

On January 17, 2018, "A Song for You" was added to Grammy Hall of Fame.

For me anyway, This is the best cover of Leon Russell's A Song For You . hundreds of singers have covered it. Donny Hathaway also arranged the music for his voice, piano, the strings and other orchestra instruments . Donny studied music at Howard University and so did Roberta Flack. Hathaway is probably best known for his two hit duets with Roberta Flack, the uptempo "Where Is The Love" and slow but beautiful love song "The Closer I Get To You." . I can still remember where I was winter of 1979 when I picked up a New York Times in the college student union and read that Donny had committed suicide by jumping out a high rise window . I cried . He left us far too early . Donny is in a better place as they say . I wish he was still here, sigh...
