A boring day in retirement is better than an exciting day in the office!

There's work and then there is work. The work I want to do is more of a hobby and that is rewarding. Being able to no longer "have to" do anything is very liberating and feels wonderful. Good for you Joe. Projects we are passionate about don't seem like work at all.

IMHO, retirement starts the day you reach financial independence. i.e. The day you reach the point where you don’t need to earn money.

After you reach FI and are out of debt, just do what you love. Work or don’t. Travel or don’t. Do whatever brings you and your family joy.

Retirement is a state of mind. It is not leaving a job.

If you can quite a tuff/stressful situation and need to work part time doing something you enjoy, that’s called winning, not failing.

At age 54 and after 33 years of working 12 hour swing shifts in industrial maintenance in manufacturing facilities, I'm definitely ready to retire. My personal shop is fully equipped to focus on restoring and chopping vintage Harley Davidsons in addition to traveling the country on 2 wheels. More time to practice piano and harmonica and play with my band also should keep me far from bored.

I’m retiring this month at 53. Next Thursday will be my last day in the office.

I hear the same things over and over….”you’ll be bored” And “you won’t be retired if you have side gigs”.

My side gigs are my hobby and some pay more than my VP corp job.

I find people who say either are Debbie Downers….and want to retire themselves!

Thanks Joe for sharing your experience. I plan on retiring in a few years and my greatest fear is being bored. You are helping me to discover my why.

Thanks Joe for your contents, i will be retiring soon so i can have time for my family and friends and It's been a year since I found ways to improve my finances and by working with a renowned professional, I was able to attain financial freedom. I have to say; "As long as you are determined and work hard, you can achieve whatever you place your mind on.

Life is too short!! No one has ever said at the end of their life that they wished that they would have worked longer.

Four months and I'm done (I'm 61). The last couple months have only solidified my resolve as work has just gotten crazier. And more to come in the next six weeks because of year-end issues and re-vamping some ways the company is doing things. Could I leave today? Sure! But I want to be responsible as I have great colleagues and don't want to leave them hanging. I will break the news to them next month and give them three months to help them transition.

Hi Joe, I'm retiring in May 2024 at age 56 and I can barely wait. My husband retired in 2021 (also age 56 at the time he retired). When he was working, he was often stressed out from work (like I often am) and that carried over into our non-work time. Since he retired, he's been happy and relaxed every day., and he has plenty of time to pursue his interests and take naps every afternoon (I''m so jealous!). He also runs errands that help me enjoy the time I am off work., which I really appreciate. When I retire I will continue my favorite hobbies (gardening, playing pickleball, cooking/preserving, learning other languages, traveling, reading, and enjoying social activities with friends & family) but I will have more time to do them and more time to relax. I have had several friends at work who died before they could retire, or died shortly after retiring, and I definitely do not want that to be me. I don't know how long I will live, or what health issues I will encounter as I age, but I am 100% sure that being retired is going to help my health and well being.

You appear to be very logical, and I wonder if you have ever struggled with emotions about taking money from your investment accounts when the market is down, or recovering from a down year (like last year). If so, how did you deal with those emotions? Have you ever drawn more money than you needed, and if so what do you do with it (keep it in cash reserves or re-invest it)? If you've made a video on this topic, I must have missed it. If not, I would appreciate it if you'd be willing to address this topic in a future video. Thanks so much!

I sound a lot like you. I am currently in reliability maintenance but also have a lot of other interests, and that's what I want to retire to. Learning and practicing new skills takes time, and retirement allows you to pursue other interests. I have another 7 years left to retirement before I can comfortably retire and support myself until my government pensions begin.

More power to you and your videos and any cash and satisfaction you get from that. You are an inspiration and source of useful info for entering into a new phase of life that many of us are blessed to be able to engage. I thank my parents the most for the work ethic that makes this possible. I/we have been happy campers our whole life and don't plan on changing that in the post-work years.

This reminds me of when the kids say "I'm bored" over summer break. Most parents that I know encourage them to try to do something. Life is what you make it.

Mesa, AZ.
My retirement plan is to travel the world. Van life up to Alaska and down Baja. Hike the PCT. Maybe triple crown. Ironman. Volunteer. Exercise all the time. Focus on eating better foods. Spend a month or two abroad each year. Who knows where it will take me and what the above will lead to! Retiring in 13 months and will be 46. Thanks for all the advice!

Hi Joe, Love your videos. I too am a retired reliability engineer. I retired twice! First retirement at 58 about 5 years ago. Stayed “retired” for about 1 year before thinking that I should go back to work so I took another full time position (long story!). Worked for another year and a half before deciding I’ve had enough and retired again! So I’ve now been officially retired for ~2.5 years. I’m now a man of leisure.
