Just got the 28-200. Own the 70-180 as well. Had the 28-75 but sold it. Took the 28-200 to the river yesterday and looked at the photos and video last night. In believable. So sharp and versatile. The range and compactness is unbelievable. If the 28-200 came out before the 70-180 I don't know if I would have bought it. The 28-200 is that awesome.

The 28-200 is that rare, "once in a decade" lens for me that changes the game (last time I felt this way was in 2005 on the Nikon 18-200 superzoom for my trusty D40, so yes, I'm getting old fast).

From 28-75, the 28-200 is effectively a f/2.8-4 lens... which is plenty of speed for indoor photos of the kids/dog/family. Outdoors, the 75-200mm range opens up and it's a treat to use. My go-to for Disney, zoos, birthday parties, the dog park... anything in daylight. At night the primes come out (I'm a big fan of the 35mm/85mm duo, but for travel, just the 35+28-200).

One other nice trick that 200mm affords, with crop mode and clear image zoom, you can eek out ~600mm from it. Obviously it'll be a 10MP image on an A7iii body, but it's superbly convenient, and much cheaper than a separate tele zoom for amateur birding at the backyard feeder.

I own the 28 -75 and the Sony 70-200 f.4. I just picked up the 28-200 and am blown away by it . I definitely know that it is a game changer and will be my lens of choice along with a fast prime when I travel again. Love it. Btw, it also has the macro like close focusing on both the wide and the telephoto end.

Thanks for the detailed comparison. I, like most sony shooter, already have the 28-75. I'd like to get a longer focal length when I travel. I am struggling to decide to get the 70-180 or the 28-200. If I do get the 28-200, should I sell the 28-75?

Hi Adam. I'm considering switching from nikon to Sony full frame. And I'm looking into Sony a7iii + Tamron 28-70 f2.8 and later the 70-180. Good choice?!
