Back in May 2015, Splatoon 1 launched. What many people might not remember is the horrid and I mean beta phase level game balance. This is what the meta was at the very beginning of Splatoon's history.

Special thanks to Silver for helping me out with specific info from this time
Music is from Splatoon 1

Excited to hear what the meta was when I was 11 years old painting the walls

There's a little prehistoric bit of meta for you- back in the first Testfire, Roller blocked shots while rolling, like a proto-Brella. You could still splat them from the front if you aimed high, but back when nobody could aim straight it was a big problem, so people started complaining that rollers just rolling at you were impossible to beat.

to think we went from "If the flick touches you, you are dead" to "actually theres a huge ass dead zone on the horizontal flick so you can stand in front of a fucking dynamo and come out unharmed"

So let's see:
S1 96d:
-wall
-2 shot kill
-survivability special

K52:
-wall
-2 shot kill
-survivability special

Mhm, checks out.

one of the main reasons i want to get splatoon 3 as early as possible is to watch the meta evolve just like this

The section when you talked about the .96 Gal Deco shows that history doesn't repeat itself, it just rhymes very frequently.

“Discord didn’t exist yet.” I feel so old. I can’t believe I’ve been playing this game that long. Honestly everything being so broken and OP made Splatoon fun.

I find it so ironic how Splatoon 2 has had a long reputation for being much more balanced than Splatoon 1 and having a broader meta, only for the current Splatoon 2 meta to end up being so similar to early Splatoon 1, especially with K-52 basically being Splatoon 1 96 2.0. Like, obviously Splatoon 2 doesn't have crazy stuff like 1-shot indirects, roller flicks always being 1-shot, and stuff, but it does have many striking parallels now, especially with the Gals.

Don’t forget, on release splatoon 1 didn’t even ranked at launch till a few days after because Nintendo wanted people to be level 10 to play ranked and they had this weird experiment where they wanted a specific amount to reach level ten before they released the patch that unlocked ranked which they reached day one

Splatoon has an interesting meta history:
Splatoon 1: 2-shot Gal with wall and panic special that can also protect you
Splatoon 2: 2-shot Gal with wall and panic special that can also protect you
Splatoon 3: 2-shot Gal with wall and panic special that can also protect.

This really takes me back. I was there for the very early days of the first game. I got it within the first week of release, and even though my internet wasn’t very good at the time and I could barely play because of it, I knew of all this stuff. Rollers being able to damage without any ink, being able to throw 4 burst Bombs in a single tank, the E-Liter. Those were certainly wilder times.

Just wanted to post to laugh that the 96 gal is back with the EXACT same kit in Splatoon 3 as of yesterday.

Splatoon's release day was one of the most broken and ridiculous times of any game I've played. No one knew how to play, and this game felt like it was balanced over a lunchtime with too much alcohol. And it was glorious.

It was really weird how much Aerospray was used. Ink Mine + Strike is an awful kit on an awful weapon, I have no idea why me and so many others ran it lmao

Bruh. My favorite things were that you could put so much damage on a blaster that indirects killed and charger fired max range with partial charges with damage up so ppl were killing with like a half charge across the map

Dude Splatoon had such a great soundtrack. I miss that game. Great video brother.

The early days of Splatoon were truly wild. But everything was so op back then and none of us knew what the hell we were doing so it was all fun and games.

The good old times back in the cats vs dogs splatfest where almost every match was a lockout on walleye and the old underpass. Literally one roller could gatekeep spawn on walleye and mid entrance on underpass.
