To put to rest all the bs from r/chess and the trolls, here's what Hikaru actually thinks about whether Levy can become a GM or not.
And if you're unaware and want to follow his journey you can find him here where he regularly uploads analyses of his games, which are fascinating insights into the mind of perhaps someone whose mind you shouldn't want an insight into.

Levy is a Super GM in my heart, no matter how often he calls the police on me.

Queens Gambit got me into chess, Levy kept me there.

I like Levy. He has helped me many times. Who cares if he’s a GM or not. Morphy was right as well as Fischer. I like chess, but it’s insidious. Lol

Even though Levy isn't a GM and possibly never will be, we cannot deny that he is one of the most succesful chess players of all time. Not in terms of his performance but in terms of popularizing the game/sport to where it is now and teaching new players to become better. The Queens Gambit might have started the chess boom, but it would have died out a long time ago if it wasn't for chess content creators like Levy. Obviously we shouldn't deny people like Hikaru, Danya, Agadmator, Eric Rosen, the Botez sisters, Anna Rudolf, Anna Cramling etc. credit as well, and don't forget about Pogchamps. But in a chess boom by definition there are a lot of new players, and Levy is most definitly the most popular entertainer/teacher in that category.

People acting like it's a burn saying 0 chance of Super GM, but like that should just be the obvious for basically everybody. It's like asking if the champion at your local golf club could just become world champion, answer is no, probably not ever. The amount of time and work it takes to get there is not something really anybody over the age of 25 can commit to unless it's already your full time job. Most GM's won't even become Super GM's.

Levy could be GM if he focuses more on classical chess and brings some of his cut throat blitz/bullet energy to those games. I've seen his analysis of his own tournament games, and he does a remarkable job second guessing himself from a winning position down to a draw in those.

I don't think it really matters because Levy has impacted the game of chess more than a lot GMs have. He's gotten so many people to play the game and he's highly respected.

The best coaches were very rarely the best players in their day (any sport) and the best players often don't make good coaches. Each requires different skill sets. The problem is when you don't know which one you are best at; or, when you desire one but you're best at the other.

I think guys like Levy/Agadmator etc took the right path. What if you just fall short of GM and then have no you-tube career to fall back on? That'd be a big yikes. It's okay for guys like you and Carlson that made it. What about the top 12th in world or top 16th in world though? Most people can't even name them w/o looking it up. Even though they made it too. Levy's net worth at age 60 will eviscerate them even if his ELO is lower. Content creation or your own business always is the way to go if you are good at that. I think anyone who looks at this issue OUTSIDE of the top 10 in the world can understand the risk/reward and how heavy it is. Levy did the right move IMO.

I love Levy and his content, but at this point I don't think that he will become a GM. He's not even among the stronger IMs right now. Levy can't focus solely on pursuing the title, while the young IMs can and they're out for blood every time they sit at the chess board. He's also very sensitive, prone to self-doubt, and insufficiently competitive (at least now he is, I don't know the teenage Levy who took the IM title). And that doesn't diminish one iota the absolute awesomeness of a human being that is Levy GothamChess Rozman. Who knows, maybe IM Rozman can give more to chess off the board than what a GM (or Super GM) Rozman could have ever given it over the board.

Well, Levy or Josh waitzkin: in terms of rating who is more likely to be GM?

I think even Levy is resigned to not making it to GM and that's OK, he's just got married and things seem to be going well for him.

Hikaru must help Levy become GM, and make a series about it. You both got this!!!!

Levy’s chances as being Super GM is about as small as Hikarus chances of winning the world championship

It's like asking if a college football star could make NFL after not playing for 2 years. Of course not. The super GMs like Magnus have played consistently since childhood. By definition, most people can't match that.

That said, he could become a GM if he really wants to accomplish that.

Chasing after a GM title is just something to keep a little dream alive inside, even if it's very unlikely, like Hikaru being world #1.
