Every nuance you never wanted to know about ult charge in Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2.

CORRECTION: 5:17 - there are two more heroes that fit into this category: Reinhardt and Zarya. Both heroes can build ult charge in the time between pressing the ultimate key and the ultimate actually deploying/activating. (thanks McMagicMarv and ax2com)

UPDATE: As Overwatch receives more patches, this video falls further out of date. Here are some (not all) notable changes:
• 1:57 Overhealth now grants 50% ult charge when damaged instead of 0%

About the "ultimates that can gain charge while being used", there are two more characters who can charge their ultimate while they use it, but it's pretty much useless.
Reinhardt can charge his ultimate while using it as long as the hammer doesn't hit the ground, aka being in the air himself.
Zarya also can charge her ultimate while using it as long as the graviton hasn't hit anything, like shooting it upwards.

And baby Dva used to he able to do that too until it got patched recently due to its op usage in the OWL as Echo.

2:17 I believe why Genji gets ult charge from deflecting Tactical Visor is because the bullets themselves don’t change. Visor is just an aimbot so the gun doesn’t change (except for it flicking quickly due to the aimbot nature of Visor but again that doesn’t change the gun itself other than its orientation)

3:58 I believe healing self inflicted damage used to grant ult charge from what I was told by friends. You’d run Zarya, rocket jump out of spawn, and have an Ana get some ult charge

2:18 thats because soldiers ult doesnt actually do damage, it just makes you lock onto enemies, his attack is still just normal attack while reapers or mccrees ult damage is a unique attack that only the ultimate does. There is no soldier ult damage to deflect, only his normal attack which is seen as a normal attack rather than ultimate damage by the game.. because it is.

For an ultimate as impactful as EMP, the ult cost is surprisingly low, but I guess that's to balance Sombra's innate lower uptime

I wouldn't say it is completely accurate to say you can't build ultimate during graviton. For example you can graviton directly in the air and you will be able to deal damage and build ultimate towards your next one. As soon as the grav lands and activates you won't be able to build ultimate cost any more until it finishes. The same concept works for Reinhardt ultimate when you fire strike and use earthshatter. If the fire strike hits enemies after you activate shatter but before the hammer hits the ground you will still get ultimate charge. You do see Zarya's alternate fire targets immediately before grav because they will still get ult charge while the graviton is moving through the air. Great video! Very informative.

Honestly damaging Bob should yield _some_ ult charge. He is extremely strong (damage output and resistance). I think the same should be done for Torb's pesky turret, though it should yield less charge than Bob obviously

Big ups for including the TF2 comparison, the 6v6 meta was kind of funny because it included spamming self damage behind choke for Uber.
