A lot of comments say how this proves that Tim does love Lucy, but in my opinion, his guilt over unintentionally putting her into this situation is bringing back the lingering guilt he felt over what happened with Isabel. He was her husband, he was responsible for her, and he failed to keep her out of trouble. He knew he could not let the same thing happen to Lucy. The guilt would just eat him alive if he couldn't save her.
