More than anything else, getting into fly tying will expose you to a whole new world and learning curve you never expected. You will start to have new curiosities and answers to questions you never thought of previously. It is a priceless experience, worth every penny.

Plus, just a bit of practice and you can have the exact fly you know you want and need, just like that! I got started because I couldn't find or buy a particular streamer pattern that was working for me. It was a no-brainer to just tie it myself. Ten years later and I've never looked back!

When I'm doing a Fly Fishing merit badge class for the scouts, or for those Summer Camps who may go through 250 kids during a summer merit badge program... this is a GREAT way to save money on fly tying materials... Thank you.

Subbed as soon as I saw you fly fishing out of a kayak. Looking forward to tying Smallmouth flies. Thanks in advance.

I'm blessed to have more deer hair color's than any one I know.as a deer hunter of 43 years experience and a fisherman for longer time I would take 5_ 7 patches and die them and have 5_ 7 color tones. I've developed around 100 color recipes so you can have 500_ 700 different colors . I'm probably down to 350 colors from 500+colors. I useRIT cloth die and measurements are exact. I've stated several times on internet that I would gladly share for free the recipes but no one ever took up my offer . it's a big money saver and I opened a package of hair th outher day and noticed a medium blue had a little fading after 10 - 15 years .Papa wishing you well. 😊

Just saw your video and enjoyed it! I too look for cheaper materials and have found by going into those recycle shops you can get wigs very cheap. They come in all colours and are very good for our large flies used on tropical species in Australia.

I get all of my foam from the craft section at walmart.
Also they have ones that are sticky backed which I use as strike indicators. I got a lifetime supply for like $5.

Awesome leads!
My biggest expense as a Tier are quality hooks. Any advice there?
I usually end up buying through a local shop as the prices aren’t much different than big box or online retailers

Thanks that helps a lot. My vise is sitting in the post office for me to pick it up. For a beginner with atm no equipment this helps alot and opens my mind. Now i have to find similar shops in my country.

I am so excited just started flyfishing (after 40 years of "conventional" fishing) 3 weeks ago. I was sure i am to layzy to tie my own flies but after 2 weeks i knew i have to because after i come home from flyfishing i always have ideas what i have to try.

My number one i want to try is the Clouser Crayfish. Maybe anyone knows an alternativ for Furry Foam?

One of the Best buys I’ve found for tinsel in all colors and sizes is the Christmas sales on decorations that the craft stores have each year. You can literally buy a life time supply of your favorite colors for just a few dollars. The only problem is you’ll have to be ready to fight the ladies who load up with the stuff every year, LOL ….

I remember when I started 55 years ago. My Dad pulled over to the side of the road, so I could "carve" a big patch of skin from a road killed porcupine. I still have a few of those quills. Road kill is a great source if you know how to process it. Just check your state laws before pick any thing up.

Purchase a cheap coffee grinder to make your own dubbing is a game changer.

Have you ever scouted thrift stores for ladies fur/fake fur jackets? Or other materials?

And you and a few buddies can each buy a different color then split the material evenly and you will all have tons of materials and colors.

I find sticking to fewer patterns saves more money. Every new material you get delays breaking even by a few months or years. 😂

If I double my fishing time, I guess I might start saving money in about 50 years.
But only by using the materials i already have... Unfourtunatelly I´ll already run out of hooks in a few weeks... So, realisticly I´d calculate about thousend years until I´ll break even...
