This is a very simplistic view, especially the bit about racism. Not that the latter doesn't exist to some extent, but that isn't the reason why more people can't fit into Australia, despite what looks like a large land area. I get very annoyed when people say, look Australia has so much land, we should pack a lot more people in there. Let me tell you why.

Not only does Australia lack water and fertile land which you may be used to if coming from Europe or Asia, but back in the 1980's scientists around the world were tasked with assessing the carrying capacity of their countries.

In Australia's case, if people wanted to maintain their existing life style - e.g. water consumption levels, land use in terms of existing practice -that is, each family having a quarter acre block and so forth, without reducing the habitat for other species and that needed for eco -system maintenance, then the population should be limited to 17 million. Since then the population has grown to 27 million, leading to immense pressure on the environment and the greatest loss of species anywhere in the world. People not only want physical space but also food, roads, timber and other resources leading to land clearing, pollution of waterways, dead spots in the ocean, air pollution and so on and this results in subsequent deterioration in the quality of life, along with contribution to climate change and the friction between environmentalists and miners and loggers. There isn't enough land on earth, much less Australia for for an ever -expanding population, especially if they all want a consumerist lifestyle.

If resentment towards foreigners appears to be growing in some quarters, you can partially attribute that to the fact that many Australians themselves can no longer afford homes or the lifestyle their parents had. Immigration, including from non -white countries was very successful for several decades. Some political parties are also exploiting that fact to divide and conquer. The same factors are apparent in other countries as well.
