Australia is actually a little bigger than the lower 48 states.
To get the correct measurement for the US you must specify land only because for some reason the US measures the country's size by including coastal waters...while most other countries just measure land.

Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, etc. are geologically exciting places with volcanoes and earthquakes and young rugged mountains, while Australia is geologically as dull as they come. That's because Australia's continental plate is very robust and driving north fast like a tank crushing shopping carts. No volcanoes means no fresh rocks to erode into minerals, an ocean to its west means no dust to borrow minerals from elsewhere. Together they mean no fresh minerals being added to its soil, so Australian soils tend to be very poor quality. This is also part of why population densities are so low.

You literally mentioned exports like 5 minutes before that. We export a tremendous amount of food. Iirc the Netherlands is the only country with a smaller population that exports more than us. Other countries with larger populations like Canada, America and China do export more.

It's also worth noting that the modern shape of New South Wales, is FAR smaller than when it was named. When Cook named it, it was basically the entirety of the East coast.
