Okay, as a Chinese person I can definitely tell you the most popular legend about the Mid Autumn Festival.

The story involves an archer named Hou Yi. Basically there used to be 10 suns that were causing a drought, and Yi was extremely talented at archery, so he shot down 9 of them. As a thank you gift, he was pronounced king. However, he would soon turn tyrannical and somehow managed to get his hands on a elixir of immortality. To save the people, his wife, Chang'e, drank the potion and flew straight to the moon, where she could keep an eye. She is now worshipped as the Moon Goddess. (this is a gross simplification lol)

The mooncake my family gets usually has lotus root paste and salted egg yolk but you can also find them with other fillings like various types of bean paste. They're also really dense so you would usually share them with other people which is why they come is such large quantities. There's also a special kind of mooncake called "snow skin mooncake" where the filling is more custardy and the wrapping has a kind of mochi-like texture

My favorite is the lotus seed. Creamy and sweet. So many different options. A popular option also salted egg yolk added in the center. It sounds a little weird, but you get a different taste added to the cake. You get sweet, Salty, crunchy. The combinations are endless

This brings me to closer to my roots as a Filipino Chinese. Here in the Philippines, we have different flavors, yet the two top main flavors like Red Bean Paste and Lotus Seed. I remembered playing Dice Game with family and friends during reunions yearly while enjoying mooncakes, sometimes winning various mooncakes as major prizes for the dice games.

my favorite is the classic, lotus paste and salted egg. relatively thinner shell, the paste is comparable to like a japanese adzuki paste and i just always love salted egg in everything. super tasty
