Shore excursions can be a double sided knife or whatever that saying is. You can save money by booking by yourself. However if something happens it falls on you! If you book through ship or a travel agent it falls on them.

For example that one family who was on a ship purchased excursion and missed departure due to a landslide. They were reimbursed and compensated. If you book them yourself and you get delayed due to a landslide the cruise line does not owe you anything.

Even a travel agent you can sue for damages. But if you do it yourself, who are you going to sue? I guarantee you the tour operator has an act of god clause in their contract.

The refreshment package lol, it was my first cruise so I did splurge on myself lol, I didn’t know what to expect, but I could’ve done without it. I started just getting non alcoholic drinks n coffee just because, I could’ve done without. And I brought cans aboard. Nothing else I really spent money on

Book an outside shore excursion, come back late and the ship is gone. Book with the cruise line and they will wait. I had experience with this coming back from Rome. They gave us the rush act but they were there waiting. My rule, in a port city go with the local companies. You can always use other transportation to get back. Out of the port city, cruise line tours.

I'll do it after a few shore excursions to relax my body.

Just be aware that if you book your own shore excursions & something happens on that excursion you’re not covered by the cruise line. So if you’re injured, you’re on your own. If you get back late, the ship will not wait. If you’re robbed, all on you.

If you book the cruise line excursion they will assist you if you’re injured, if the excursion is robbed that’s on their insurance, & if you’re held up & back late the ship will wait.

It’s more expensive, but if you are a worrier the extra money might be worth it for peace of mind.

There was a cruise we went on that we had a bunch of credits for it and we thought we bought the drinks package for 1 of our cabins in advance of the trip and then we got on the ship and they said we didn’t have it so then we bought it again on the ship and it was a waste of money for us
