At the AGO's library, the librarians also associate other metadata info to books like - mentions to works and artists in our collection, exhibition history, collections of other museums/galleries, conferences/exhibitions/biennales, donors, and art-history specific keywords and subject matter. Soooo amazing it makes my research so much richer and smoother. <3

You have a very humanistic view of meta-data.

To me, it's much like markup language that works in the general Internet.

In that context, metadata is information that marks up, or adds significant value to, some data that preexists.
