Ben has had Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome
and has been a pretty heavy smoker for quite some time now, hence one of the real reasons Keith was hired in 2014 to take care of the heavy vocals because fatigued as he always is, he just couldn't do it anymore. The amount of alcohol he was drinking suppressed the major side effect of his disease but once he went sober, all the symptoms sprung up at once. He is the sole member left of the original band. He's also the heart. So yea, he has his troubles with singing live, but the fact that he keeps going and the band moves as one... fans of them from inception to now, really don't give a shit about him "not sounding good live" when he's been through and continues to deal with the things he has dealt with. I'd go to their concerts even if he wasn't singing a single, word to be honest. I'm aware this video is hella years old, but I'm browsing through all their videos since I'm going to see them again soon and no one seems to get the bases of just how deep to hell and back this man went to. Just an FYI.

He sounds fine, it's live music. He's missing the effects and overdubs on an album. Lane Staley (AIC) laid 16 vocal tracks to achieve the sound on "Angry Chair".
